Stage 1
Digestion beings in the mouth. The teeth grinds the food and the salivary glands mix it with saliva to create the bolus.
Stage 1.2
The bolus passes through the pharynx and the esophagus into the stomach.
Stage 1.3
The stomach secretes the gastric juices which are mixed with the bolus and become the chyme. This ends digestion.
Stage 2
Chyme reaches the small intestine where it mixes with juices from the pancreas, liver and the small intestine itself, to become chyle.
When the nutrients get into the blood stream it is called absorption.
Stage 3
The remains of food that has not been absorbed by the small intestine continues to the large intestine. There, water is absorbed and faeces wait in the rectum to be expelled from the body through the anus.
