expression

consist of numbers, variables, and operations (does not have an equal sign)

equation

a mathematical sentence formed by placing the symbol = between two expressions

function

a pairing of inputs with outputs such that each input is paired with exactly one output.

reciprocal

pair of numbers whose product is 1: the reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2

like terms

terms that have the same variable parts. Constant terms are also like terms.

linear equation

an equation whose graph is a line

slope

slope of a nonvertical line is the ratio of the vertical change (rise) to the horizontal change (run) between any two points on the line

parallel lines

lines in the same plane that do not intersect; same slope

perpendicular lines

lines in the same plane that intersect to form a right angle; slopes are negative reciprocals

inequality

a mathematical sentence formed by placing an inequality symbol between two expressions

slope intercept form

y = mx + b

point-slope form

y-y1 = m(x-x1), where m is the slope and (x1,y1) is the point the line is passing through.

standard form

Ax + By = C
