Complete Predicate
The main word or words in the complete predicate (the verb)
Simple Predicate
A group of words that has both a subject and a predicate working together and can stand alone as a sentence and expresses a complete thought.
Independent Clause
Two or more of the same sentence part (subject, verb, etc) joined by a conjunction
Compound
A group of words that contains both a subject and a predicate but it does not express a complete thought. It cannot stand alone as a sentence. It will come either at the beginning of the sentence (and be set off by a comma) or at the end of the sentence (after the independent clause) and include a subordinating conjunction at the beginning.
Dependent Clause
Noun or pronoun that follows a preposition and answers "what" or "whom" about the preposition
Object of the preposition
A group of words used as a sentence but does not express a complete thought
Fragment
noun that names general people, places, things, or ideas
Common Noun
noun that names specific people, places, things, or ideas - is always capitalized
Proper Noun
nouns made up of more than one noun - may be spelled as one word, two words, or as two or more hyphenated words
Compound Noun
A noun or noun phrase that renames or gives more information about a noun - it comes immediately after the noun it renames and is often set off by commas
Appositive
Noun that names one person, place, thing, or idea
Singular Noun
Noun that names more than one person, place, thing, or idea
Plural Noun
Nouns that show ownership, includes an apostrophe (note how to use the apostrophe based on singular or plural spelling)
Possessive Noun
Tells what the subject is by showing a relationship between the subject and a noun or adjective in the predicate
Linking Verb
The word that comes between the verb and direct object that answers "to whom" or "for whom" the action was done
Indirect Object
Tells what the subject does
Action Verb
Describes the subject
Predicate Adjective
Receives the action of the verb and answers "whom" or "what" about the verb
Direct Object
Renames (equals) the subject
Predicate Noun
Part of speech of the direct object and indirect object
Noun
Part of the sentence that will never contain an important sentence part (subject/verb or any part of the sentence pattern)
