P1 - States of matter
Terms in this set (8)
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid, Liquid, Gas
In water, steam and ice, the particles are the same, but what is different?
They have different arrangements and different energies
How do particles in a solid move?
They vibrate around a fixed position - they have the least energy
How do particles in a liquid move?
They move in random directions at low speed. - They have more energy than a solid, but less than a gas
How do particles in a gas move?
They move in random directions at high speed. - They have more energy than liquids
What do we call the energy of a moving particle?
When you heat a substance, like a metal, what happens to its density and why?
It becomes less dense because its volume increases but its mass stays the same
How are the forces in solids, liquids and gasses different?
Solids - strong forces
Liquids - medium forces
Gasses - very weak forces
