- Morphemes can be separated into two categories: free morphemes which can stand on their own, and bound morphemes that must be attached to another morpheme in order to make sense.
o Bound morphemes: bi, ty, un, ed, s
o When combined with free morphemes, bound morphemes create completely new words and therefore new meanings to the words which they were applied to.
o Using the free morphemes: cycle, cat, usual, trap, and pet, adding the above bound morphemes would change these words into: bicycle, catty, unusual, trapped, and pets.
o The new meanings created by adding prefixes or suffixes (bound morphemes) can change either the tense of the words or the category or grammar that in falls into.
