Key Concepts:
Terms in this set (26)
Variable
A letter used to represent one or more numbers.
Additive Identity Property
The sum of a number and zero is always that number. For example, a + 0 = a.
Multiplicative Identity Property
A number times one equals itself. For example, a X 1 = a.
Multiplicative Property of Zero
Any number multiplied by 0 is 0. For example, a X 0 = 0.
Inverse
Opposite. The reverse of.
Per
for each: 100 centimeters for each meter
Multiplicative Inverse Property
To multiply by a numbers reciprocal. ex: x * (1/x) = 1
Additive Inverse Property
To add a numbers opposite. ex: x + (-x) = 0
Absolute Value
Measures the distance a number is away from 0. |-4| or |4| = 4.
Arithmetic Sequence
A pattern in which each term is found by adding the same number to the previous term.
Common Difference
The number that is being added to each term in an arithmetic sequence.
Common Ratio
The number that is being multiplied to each term in an geometric sequence.
Dependent Event
The probability that the outcome or occurrence of the first event affects the outcome or occurrence of the second event so that the probability is changed. An example.... drawing a Reese's from a candy jar filled with 10 different candy bars will effect the probability of drawing another Reese's candy bar.
Geometric Sequence
A pattern in which each term is found by multiplying the previous term by the same number.
Independent Event
The probability that one event occurs in no way affects the probability of the other event occurring. An example... Flipping a coin and rolling a number cube.
Integer
a positive or negative whole number; a number that is not a fraction.
Negative
Any number less than "0".
The "nth" term
The answer to the "x" position in a number sequence. For example the 5th position in the sequence 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.... is 10 since it is the 5th number in the sequence.
Pattern
A number sequence that follows a given rule, for example: 2x = 2, 4, 6, 8...... the rule is which ever number in the sequence you are on, multiply it by 2.
Scientific Notation
A method of expressing numbers in terms of a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. For example: 10,492 is written as 1.0492 × 10 to the 4th power.
Sea Level
The level of the ocean's surface, used in reckoning the height of geographical features such as hills or the ocean floor. (20 feet below, -20 feet).
Standard Form
A way of writing down very large or very small numbers easily, usually referring to the answer of a scientific notations number written out.
Term
A single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together. ______ are separated by + (plus), - (minus), or = (equal) signs.
2x + 4 = 7 would have three of this vocabulary word.
Coefficient
A number that is being multiplied by a variable. 2x + 4 = 7..... the "2" is this vocabulary word.
Ratio
The comparison of two quantities (numbers). There are three ways to display this term: 3 to 1, 3:1, 3/1.
Unit Rate
A ratio that compares two quantities measured in different units, one of which is simplified to a quantity of 1 (example miles per hour - mph - m/h).
