What unit of measurements used to determine the loudness of sounds?
When sound waves have peaks very close together, what kind of sounds do you hear?
high pitch sound
Think about the diagram of the ear. Which part of the ear changes vibrations to nerve signals?
When sound waves enter your ear, which part of the ear starts to vibrate first?
When sound waves bounce off smooth, flat surfaces, what happens?
Think about the diagram of the ear. Which part acts like a funnel of the sound waves?
When frequency increases, wavelenghts
Name the two types of waves.
longitudinal and transverse
How are freuency and pitch related?
The higher the frequency of the wave, the higher pitch of the sound.
If you wanted to do an experiment to test how well different materials muffle sounds, what variable would you keep the same and what variable would change?
same: hold material same distance, same person speaking, same intensity, and same place.
change: material blocking sound
Does a bass or violin produce a higher pitched sound? Why?
The violin plays at a higher pitch because its strings are shorter which causes quick vibrations matching a high sound.f
Pretend you are throwing rocks into a pond. First, you toss in a little pebble and then you toss in a big rock. Describe the differences in the sound waves and the water waves.
With the pebble, both sound and water waves would have small amplitudes. With the big rock, sound and water waves would have big amplitudes.
