Lipid bilayer with protiens that have specific jobs. Controls what enters and leaves the cell (selectively permiable). The modle is called the fluid mosaic model bevause it is made of many parts (mosaic) that can flow (fluid) within the membrane.
Site of many reactions of cell respiration, changes chemical energy (glucose) to chemical energy in the form of ATP (thought to have been free-living bacteria at some point because they have their own DNA)
Made in the nucleolus, of RNA protein, some float free in the cytoplasm - make proteins for the cell, some are attached to the rough ER - make proteins for export
Series of folded membranes joined to nucleus, provides passageways for transportation and divides the cell into isolated compartments (rough - ribosomes, smooth - no ribosomes, makes lipids and membranes for the cell)
Receives molecules from the rough ER for further processing before shipping them out of the cell
Membrane enclosed packages of digestive (hydrologic enzymes), can break down food in single celled organisms, recycle out cell parts, and even play a role in development
Protein network that anchors organelles, supports the cell, and allows for movement (cilia - fingers/hairs, flagella - tail/s)
Contains the genetic material in the form of complex DNA and proteins = chromatin, when they are visible (during cell division) called chromosomes (DNA code for proteins has to be copied to get out of ribosomes)
Where the parts of ribosomes are assembled to form RNA and proteins
Located outside the cell membrane, used for support and structure along with the vacuole (made primarily of cellulose - polysaccharide/complex carbohydrate, also in bacteria but not as cellulose)
Storage area for water, enzymes, and/or waste, found in plant (larger and more important because it provides pressure on cell wall giving plant support - when water is lost plant droops) and animal cells
found only in plant cells, contains chlorophyll and other pigments to absorb light energy and convert it to chemical energy - ATP
