Terms in this set (54)
What is the most important lab safety rule?
Follow the instructions given by the teacher
Name the base SI (metric) unit for measuring mass. What piece of equipment would you use to measure mass?
Grams are the base SI unit for mass; Use a scale or triple beam balance to determine mass.
Name the base SI (metric) unit for measuring distance/length. What piece of equipment would you use to measure length/distance?
Meters are the base SI unit for length/distance; Use a metric ruler or meter stick to determine distance
Name the base SI (metric) unit for measuring liquid volume. What piece of equipment would you use to measure liquid volume?
Liters are the base SI unit for liquid volume; Use a graduated cylinder to measure liquid volume
Why do you need to know how to use the metric system?
It is used in most countries by most scientists around the world
Steps to use a triple beam balance
-make sure the balance is zeroed
-place object on balance
-move the hundreds rider one notch at a time until the balance arrow sinks below the balance line; move hundreds rider back one
-move the tens rider one notch at a time until the balance arrow sinks below the balance line; move tens rider back one
-Move the ones rider slowly so that the balance arrows lines up with the balance line
-Add all 3 riders together to find mass
1 cubic centimeter (1 cm3) equals _______mL
What method do you use to find the volume of an irregularly shaped object?
The Water Displacement Method
What are the steps of the water displacement method?
-Read the volume of just the water
-Place the object in water
-Read the volume of the object and the water
-Subtract the volume of just the water from the volume of the water and the object
Convert ml to cm cubed (1mL=1 cm cubed)
Jimmy is finding the volume of a magnet. He fills the graduated cylinder to 50 mL then drops the magnet in the graduated cylinder. It reads 57 mL with the magnet. What is the volume of the magnet
7 cubic centimeters

Dissecting scissors or a scalpel
What should you do if there is a problem in the lab, such as a fire, spill or injury?
Notify the teacher

King Henry Died Drinking Chocolate Milk
When reading liquid volume, what is the name of the "dip" or "curve" you observe in the liquid?
What part of the meniscus do you read when reading a graduated cylinder?
What does SI mean?
International System of Units (also known as the Metric System); a standard for measurement; based on multiples of 10
What is mass?
the amount of matter in an object (does not change)
What is weight?
the force of gravity upon an object (weight changes based on the location of that object)
