What are the 7 basic parts of an Ethernet frame?
the preamble, MAC of recipient, MAC of sender, type of data, data, a pad (if needed), and a frame check sequence, generally called a CRC (Cyclical redundancy check)
What is the minimum size of an Ethernet frame?
64 bytes
CSMA
Carrier Sense Multiple Access
What is CSMA?
When a sender senses if the network is free and then sends out data if it is.
CD
Collision Detection
If there is a 10baseT or higher network that none of the computers can get on the network, what should you first check?
The hub.
What is the highest number of frames that can be collisions normally?
10%
Which pins does 10baseT use to send and receive data?
1 and 2 to send, 3 and 6 to recieve
What is the order of the pairs in TIA/EIA 568A wire?
Green/white, green, orange/white, blue, blue/white, orange, brown/white, brown
What is the order of the pairs in a TIA/EIA 568B wire?
Orange/white, Orange, Green/White, Blue, Blue/White, Green, Brown/white, Brown
How far could 10baseFL go? What is the difference between it and 10baseT?
2km v 100m, It used fiber instead of Ethernet.
What device converts between different types of Ethernet connections, i.e. fiber and copper?
A media converter
What is a crossover cable used for? What is switched in it?
It is used for connecting hubs. It switches the 1 & 2 and the 3 & 6 pairs so that output goes to input and input goes to output.
Why did switches replace hubs?
Only one message can be sent across a hub at a time.
How are switches better than hubs?
It can create a connection between two nodes, giving them the full speed of the network.
What is an SAT
An SAT or Source Address table stores all the MACs from every device connected to the switch.
With full-duplex Ethernet cards, what systems are eliminated?
CSMA and CD
What is STP? What does it prevent?
STP is Spanning tree protocol. It prevents bridge loops from crashing the network.
What are the steps to diagnosing a network connectivity problem?
1. Realize a device can't connect to the network.
2. Examine the switch for obvious damage.
3. Check link lights and try a different port.
4. Check cables for bent, broken, or loose cables.
5. Replace the switch with a known-good device.
