Skeletal system
The system of bones and joints which provides protection, support, and allows body movement. There are 206 bones in the human body which make up about 18% of the weight of a human body

Surrounds the cells and help them keep their shape and holds cells together. (with Laminin)
Composition of bone
Bones are composed of: 45% Mineral matter (Calcium, Phosphate, and Calcium Carbonate) 30%, Organic matter (Marrow) 25% water

The hard outer portion of bones which is made up of dense web of fibers
Spongy bone tissue
Small holes which make bone tissue less Dense
Haverisian Canals
Numerous channels that penetrate bones which form a network for capillaries and nerves to bring nutrients into the bone
Marrow
Soft tissue at the center of many bones. There are two types of marrow
Red Marrow
Found in flat bones like the ribs, and the end of long bones like the ulna and radius. They produce red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells
Yellow Marrow
Stores fat and found in the center of center bones. It can also produce red blood cells when a person has lost a lot of blood, or when a person has certain blood diseases
Cartilage
Strong flexible tissue that covers the ends of bones and prevents the surfaces of bones from rubbing against each other by reducing friction
Synovial Fluid
Found in bone joints. In works in conjunction with cartilage to lubricate joints and reduce friction between the bones
Periosteum
A strong outer membrane that surrounds the bone. It helps produce new bone tissue and heal after an injury so the bones can function and grow properly
