Secondary education
High School education
"College"
One providing higher education or specialized professional or vocational training
CTE
(Career Technical Education) Career based classes in high school such as BMA, VEI, CADD, Finance, Accounting and courses at GCI
GCI
(Genesee Career Institute) Career based classes available in grades 11 and 12
Post-secondary
Training/education after secondary school (after high school)
Certificate
Credentials for career specific training programs (usually 3-18 months) completed after high school at a community college or specialized training facility
Associate Degree
Career focused classes with some general education coursework (usually 2 years full time) at a community college
Skilled Trade
A career requiring specialized technical training beyond high school including coursework and on-the-job training
Apprenticeship
A paid job where someone who is new to the field (the apprentice) learns the skills needed for the job (trained by experts in their field)
ASVAB
(Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) A US military test used to determine if someone qualifies to enlist in the United States Armed Forces
Undergraduate school
A college offering an Associate or Bachelor's Degree
Bachelor's Degree
A degree earned at four-year colleges and universities (usually 4-5 years full time)
Graduate school
A university offering a degree beyond a Bachelor's Degree
Master's Degree
Degree earned after a Bachelor's Degree (usually 1-2 years of additional study)
Doctorate Degree
The highest level of academic degree completed after a Bachelor's and usually a Master's or Graduate Degree.
PhD
A Doctor of Philosophy degree (beyond a graduate degree) awarded by universities to a candidate who has submitted a thesis or dissertation based on extensive and original research in their chosen field.
FAFSA
(Free Application for Federal Student Aid ) Application for securing government money to help students pay for college
Grant
Financial aid that doesn't have to be paid back
Subsidized loan
A college loan for students who have financial need with interest charges paid by the government
Unsubsidized loan
A student loan for students without a requirement of financial need; interest is the responsibility of the student
Work study
Student campus jobs (government paid) which are part of financial aid packages
Scholarship
Money awarded to students to pay for college that doesn't have to be repaid
Common App
An online application used by many colleges that enables students to apply to multiple schools without completing a separate application for each school
Parchment
Website used to electronically send high school transcripts to colleges
Counselor page
Component of college applications completed by your high school counselor prior to your application being considered complete
