document created by Benjamin Franklin calling for the colonies to join/unite under one main government. Did not go into effect because people were not ready to have a central government.

Articles of Confederation
this document was out countries first constitution. Because of the control England had over them, people were afraid to have a strong central government so the AOC gave more power to the states than the federal government.

Northwest Ordinance of 1787
this states that congress has the right to govern all territorial lands (remember congress could not govern the states under the AOC) guidelines were set to become a state. This also outlawed slavery in the new territories... the beginning of the feelings for the Civil War
occurred in Massachusetts because taxes were so high that farmers couldn't pay them without selling their land. Under the AOC, only sates had the power to tax and raise an army. The farmers revel and Massachusetts couldn't get any help because there was no federal army. Outcome was that is showed that we needed a stronger federal government

New Jersey Plan
discovered at the constitutional convention. This plan wanted to keep cameral legislature, have a one vote per state representative, and elect a week executive (like a president)

The Great Compromise
the compromise made for everyone to agree with the governments set-up. Called for congress having 2 houses (The House of Representatives and The Senate). HOR representation based on state population and the Senate has 2 representatives per state.
south wanted slaves but didn't want to pay taxes on them. they did want them to count towards population in the house of representatives so that they could have more people representing them, North didn't want slaves, but wanted to tax the Southern slave owners, they also did not want them to count towards population, the compromise was that slaves would be counted as 3/5 a person for both representation and taxes.
supreme power or authority
principle that the authority of the government is created and sustained by the will of the people (people decide what they want to happen in government by voting)
