Nuclear Structure and Transport
Terms in this set (24)
A dense structure found in the nucleus associated with specific regions on the chromatin. Involved in splicing (possibly storage for splicing proteins?)
Areas where a certain chromosome is usually localized in the nucleus.
Relaxed state of chromatin. Present in the nucleus and near nuclear pores suggesting that the transcripts are being transported out of the nucleus through the nuclear pores.
Part of the nucleolus. Where rRNA is transcribed.
Condensed state of chromatin. Is concentrated where chromatin comes in contact with laminar proteins.
Adaptor protein that binds to NLS on cargo to direct proteins through nuclear poer
Binds either to NLS of cargo or importin α associated with a cargo molecule
Inner nuclear membrane
Inside of the membrane that faces the lumen. Has laminar proteins and heterochromatin associated with it.
Genetic disease caused by mutations to nuclear laminar proteins
Lamins A and B
Lamin A gene can be alternatively spliced. B is encoded by a different lamin.
Structure at the luminal end of the nuclear pore
Various structures in the nucleus that are densely packed and usually associated with the same area of chromatin in each cell
Nuclear membrane. Bilayer. Fused with ER membrane.
Nuclear envelope lumen
Also called perinuclear space. Is fused with ER lumen.
Nuclear export sequence (NES)
Section of a protein that targets it to the cytoplasm and allows it to bind to importins that will let it pass through the nuclear pore.
Proteins that are associated with the inner nuclear membrane. Form a mesh lining the inner surface. Are filamentous.
Nuclear localization sequence (NLS)
Section of a protein that targets it to the nucleus and allows it to bind to importins that will let it pass through the nuclear pore.
Nuclear pore complex
Openings in the nucleus that allow the passage of molecules and complexes. Is radially and horizontally symmetrical
Nucleolar organizing regions (NOR)
Regions of chromatin where nucleoli are usually localized to
Densely packed structure in the nucleus that is responsible for the production of ribosomes
Proteins that make up a complex in the nuclear pore
Outer nuclear membrane
The outside layer of the nuclear membrane
Synonym for nuclear bodies
Modulated as on or off by GAP and GEF. Ran-GTP facilitates association of cargo with export/import factors. Ran-GDP facilitates dissociation
