staff
A musical graph of five horizontal lines. (pl.= staves)
ledger lines
Extra, short, horizontal lines extending the staff above or below five lines.
bar lines
Vertical lines on the staff, marking off measures.
measure
A group of beats marked by bar lines, with the first beat usually stressed.
double bar line
Double vertical lines indicating the end of a section or of a piece.
repeat sign
Two dots with a double bar, indicating a section to be repeated.
note
A written symbol for a rhythm or pitch.
notehead
The oval part of a note.
stem
The vertical line above or below the notehead.
flag
The line or lines from the stem, indicating duration.

A horizontal line joining stems, replacing flags; they group eighth notes (or smaller values) together, making it easier to see the 'beat.'
tempo
Speed; indicated with a word, or a metronome marking (as distinct from 'beat')
beat
Ongoing basic pulse; an underpinning (as distinct from 'rhythm')
rhythm
Action in time, what happens within the beat (as distinct from 'beat')
time signature
The 'fraction' at the beginning of a piece, showing how many beats in a bar, and what value of note gets the beat
fermata
A symbol indicating a hold (over a note) or a pause (over a rest).
