Eukaryote Organelles and Functions

STUDY
PLAY
Cell Wall
plant only, tough, provides support and protection
Plasma Membrane
thin barrier that controls movement of materials in/out of cell, maintains homeostasis (balance)
Cytoplasm
supports organelles, jelly like substance
Nucleus
large, round organelle that controls the cell and holds the DNA
Nucleolus
produces ribosomes
Endoplasmic Reticulum
network of tubes that carries materials through cell. Smooth ER makes lipids (fat). Rough ER makes proteins.
Ribosomes
small, round organelles found on ER or in cytoplasm that produce proteins
Golgi Apparatus
sorts, packages, and sends proteins throughout the cell
Mitochondria
break down glucose (sugar), C6H12O6, molecules to produce energy.
Lysosome
breaks down food molecules and digests old cell parts
Vacuoles
store food, water, waste
Large Central Vacuole
stores water in plant cells. Larger than the Nucleus.
Chloroplasts
use energy from sun to make glucose (sugar) for the plant (photosynthesis)
Cholorphyll
green pigment found in chloroplasts
Cytoskeleton
provides internal structure, located in the cytoplasm
Centrioles
help animal cell division
Organelle
specialized structures that perform specific jobs in the cell
Prokaryote Cell
unicellular cells that do not have a nucleus
Eukaryote Cell
usually multicellular, contain a nucleus and several membrane bound organelles
