Calorimeter
A device used to measure specific heat.
Conduction
Transfer of energy through matter by colliding particles.
Conductor
Material such as copper wire that conduct heat (and electrons) easily.
Convection
Transfer of energy by the motion of heated particles in a fluid.
Heat
Thermal energy that flows from a warmer material to a cooler material.
Insulator
Materials such as fleece or fiberglass that do not allow heat to pass easily through them.
Radiation
Transfer of energy in the form of electromagnetic waves.
Specific Heat
Amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a material 1 K (1 °C).
Temperature
A measure of the average kinetic energy of all the particles in an object.
Thermal Energy
Total energy, including kinetic and potential energy, of the particles that make up a material.
