Terms in this set (38)
The two kinds of electric charge
Positive, Negative
The unit of electric charge
Coulomb (C)
Describes an object that has equal amounts of positive and negative charges
Electrically Neutral
Describes an object whose net charge is not zero
Charged
A tiny imbalance between positive and negative charge on an object
Static Electricity
The science of electric charge and current
Electricity
The flow of electric charge
Electric Current
A complete path through which electric charge can flow
Electric Circuit
A component that is used to control current in many circuits
Resistor
A circuit with the switch in the on position, so there are no breaks and charge can flow
Closed Circuit
A circuit with the switch in the off position, so there is a break and charge cannot flow
Open Circuit
A device for alternately allowing and not allowing charge to flow in a circuit
Switch
The unit of electric current
Ampere (A)
A measure of electric potential energy
Voltage
The measurement unit for voltage
Volt (V)
A measuring instrument for current, voltage, and resistance
Multimeter
A device that transforms chemical energy to electric energy, and provides electrical force in a circuit
Battery
Determines how much current flows for a given voltage; the higher it is, the less current
Resistance
The unit of measurement for resistance
Ohm
States that the current is directly related to the voltage and inversely related to the resistance
Ohm's Law
A material with low electrical resistance; metals such as copper and aluminm
Conductor
A material with high electrical resistance; plastic and rubber
Insulator
A material between conductor and insulator in its ability to carry current
Semiconductor
A type of variable resistor that can be adjusted to give resistance within a certain range
Potentiometer
An electric circuit that has only one path for current
Series Circuit
The difference in voltage across an electrical device that has current flowing through it
Voltage Drop
The total voltage of all drops in a series circuit must equal the voltage supplied by the battery
Kirchhoff's Voltage Law
An electric circuit with more than one path or branch
Parallel Circuit
States that all of the current entering a circuit branch must exit again
Kirchhoff's Current Law
A branch in a circuit with zero or very low resistance
Short Circuit
An automatic device that trips like a switch to turn off an overloaded circuit
Circuit Breaker
A device with a thin wire that melts and breaks an overloaded circuit
Fuse
The rate at which electrical energy is changed into other forms of energy
Electrical Power
Unit used to measure power; one of these equals one joule per second
Watt (W)
Electrical current that flows in one direction, as with a battery
Direct Current (DC)
Electrical current that reverses direction at repeated intervals, as with household electricity
Alternating Current (AC)
An outlet with an automatic device that protects you against electric shock
Ground Fault Interrupt (GFI) Outlet
Converts high-voltage electricity to lower voltage electricity
Transformer
