Key Concepts:
Terms in this set (62)
Opposites
two numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number just on different sides of zero on the number line
Integers
the set of all whole numbers and their opposites; the set contains: positive integers, negative integers and zero
positive integers
integers to the right of zero on a number line, they are greater than 0; you "have" money
negative integers
integers to the left of zero on a number line, they are less than 0; you "owe" money
0
the only integer that is neither positive nor negative
compare numbers
writing numbers using the inequality symbols: > or <
>
the symbol used to compare two numbers; is read, "is greater than"
<
the symbol used to compare two numbers; is read, "is less than"
=
the symbol used to compare two numbers; is read, "is equal to" or just "is"
gain
positive; to add to from a certain point; often in business or football (gain of yards)
loss
negative; taking away an amount of money or in a game like football (loss of yards)
deposit

below zero
negative; reference to temperature; the further below zero, the colder the temperature is getting
above zero
positive; reference to temperature; the further above zero, the hotter the temperature is getting
greatest loss
smallest integer; for example: -5 is a greater loss than -3
greatest gain
largest integer; for example: 6 is a greater gain than 3
smallest integer
the integer farthest to the left on a number line
largest integer
the integer farthest to the right on a number
order numbers from least to greatest
graph the integers, then read/write them from left to right
order numbers from greatest to least
graph the integers, then read/write them from right to left
absolute value
is the distance a number is from 0 on a number line; ALWAYS written as a positive integer
are equally distant from zero
numbers with the same absolute value
the lesser the absolute value.
The closer an integer is to zero
the greater the absolute value.
The farther an integer is from zero
