-Nestor tells Patroclus to get Achilles to come, and if he doesn't come, Patroclus should wear Achilles' armor into battle to scare the Trojans

-Patroclus runs to Achilles, and Achilles delivers a simile about how Patroclus is like a child running to his mother
-Patroclus says he never wants to exp Menas like Achilles'

Book 18:

-Thetis and some of Achilles' girls come outside to join in the grieving

-Doesn't care about Briseis or any of the gifts Agamemnon has offered anymore, just about revenge
-Achilles finally arms himself
-All he has left is his Dad's ash spear and his team of immortal horses
-Achilles blames them for leaving Patroclus' body there
-The horses are given a voice by Hera
-The horses tell him they have a lot of power, but their power can't save him from
being cut down by a god and a man
-He may have the finest of everything (Weapon, geras, team, etc.) but these are
only a reminder of his impending doom

-Claims Chryseis as his maiden after they sack the Trojan town she resided in
-Chryses, A priest of Apollo in said town and the father of Chryseis, goes to supplicate Agamemnon to return his daughter
-Agamemnon refuses, and Chryses prays to Apollo to put a plague on the Achaeans, which Apollo does
-Achilles asks who has brought this plague on their armies, and is directed to Agamemnon (See Achilles Book 1)
Book 2:
-Zeus sends dreams to Agamemnon telling him to attack Troy and it will fall
-This is a trick, he wants him to attack and be defeated for Achilles' glory
-He's able to discern dream Nestor from real Nestor
-The fact that he understands the dream is a testament to his wisdom, but him
believing the lie demonstrates his human flaws
-Nestor tells Agamemnon to send the soldiers home as a test of their loyalty
-Agamemnon lies to his troops telling them Zeus tricked me, when in reality he really is being tricked
-Odysseus eventually convinces all the soldiers to snap out of it
Book 6:

Book 6:
-Greeks are quickly moving up on Troy
-Hector rushes back to the city qucikly to meet his mother
-She asks him why he came back, because it's rare that the best fighter leaves
mid battle
-Assumes he's come back to pray to Zeus
-Cares about her son but also deeply cares about the gods
-Hector mirrors her expectations
-Before returning to battle he needs to get his brother
-hector also wants to see his wife and son in case he dies soon
-Doesn't know for sure that he'll die soon
-Andromache says that Hector is her everything
-If he goes she literally has nothing
-He tells her he understands, but he needs to go because he needs to protect himself from shame
-He also says that the Trojans must not be defeated, cause then she'll be captured
-This isn't love tho, he's protecting her cause she is a reflection of his honor,
which he must protect at all costs
-She gives him purpose/reason in life (Like Briseis to Achilles)
-This purpose/reason is only reason he fights
-He reaches out for his baby but his baby cries because it is scared of his armor
Book 7:
-This day begins in Book 5 with a duel, and it ends with one in Book 7
-Hector returns to the battlefield and challenges the Argives to bring their best champion to duel him
-Since no one volunteers, Agamemnon and Nestor draw up lots, and Ajax is chosen
-Nigth falls in the middle of their duel so they must stop
Book 8:
-Zeus tips the scales in favor of the Trojans
-The Argives are all retreating and Hector taunts Diomedes as he flees
-They must stop the counterattack at the ships tho because night falls
Books 12-15:
-Hector is mad as hell and destroys the gates with a boulder
-Hector breaking thru the greek barriers is important, because its something even
Achilles won't do
-Hector keeps pushing and by the end is literally hanging from the stern of Ajax's ship and setting it on fire
Book 16:
-Patroclus is ****in shit up but Hector defeats him
-While Patroclus is lying on the ground he delivers a prophecy of Hector's own

-Hector responds with disbelief saying maybe he'll be the one to kill Achilles
-He takes Achilles armor
-By putting the helmet on his head he's sealed his own death
Book 21:
-Hector's parents beg him to stay inside Troy
-He tries to think of alternatives to fighting that still protect his shame
-He's still ignorant to his fate
-He's hopeful
-The instant he sees Achilles coming, he feels it in his bones
-All feelings of shame, hope, and glory are overridden by self-preservation
-Zeus sends down Athena disguised as one of Hector's brothers, saying they can face him together
-So Hector stops to face Achilles
-As soon as he misses his spear and realizes his brother was never there, he accepts that he was tricked
-With no hope left, he knows he'll die, but he tries to die fighting
-He's speared in the throat, but he asks Achilles to leave his body in Troy
-Achilles refuses
-He then prophesizes Achilles' death by Paris and Apollo
-Hector's death spells the destruction of the city
-To make sure the Trojans get hurt good, Athena gives power to Diomedes
-While on the battlefield, Athena convinces Ares to back off and let the mortals fight It out
-Diomedes is still killing everyone
-Pandarous, the Trojan archer, decides to shoot at Diomedes. Hits him in the right shoulder
-Pandaros roots the Trojans out
-Diomedes calls Sthenealaos to pull the arrow out
-Diomedes prays to Athena to be able to spear the guy who shot him
-Athena comes to him, and tells him he has his father's strength in him. She also takes the mist away from his eyes, so that he can tell who's a mortal and who's a god. She says that if any god challenges him, he should maintain eye contact and back away slowly. Every god but Aphrodite. Athena tells Diomedes that if he sees the goddess of love, he should go on the attack
-Aeneas is looking for Pandaros, and asks why he doesn't take another shot at Diomedes
-Pandaros claims that a god must be helping Diomedes. He says that he has bad luck, and that he had already shot Menelaus and Diomedes
-Aeneas and Pandaros agree to team up in a chariot
-Diomedes is warned by Sthenelaos that he sees them
-Diomedes throw his spear killing Pandaros
-Aeneas leaps down from the chariot
-Diomedes picks up a rock and throws it at Aeneas, crushing Aeneas hip
-When Diomedes goes in to kill Aeneas, Aphrodite is there trying to help his son Aeneas (she wraps a clock around him to protect him from enemy weapons
-Diomedes attack Aphrodite stabbing her in the wrist
-Since Aphrodite becomes hurt, Apollo comes down and wraps Aeneas in a mist of invisibility, and continues to carry him to safety
-Diomedes mocks Aphrodite, and Iris comes down to help Aphrodite go back to safety in Mount Olympus
-Diomedes still is going after Aeneas who is being carried by Apollo
-Apollo successfully defends Aeneas from Diomedes attack, and Apollo tells Diomedes not to mess with the gods
-Diomedes back off
-So nobody suspects anything, Apollo makes a ghost replica of Aeneas which he sends down to keep fighting. The Trojans, rally around this replica
-Apollo calls Ares, the god of war, to go after Diomedes
-Sarpedon, leader of the Lykians, starts yelling at the Trojans to pick up the slack.
-Hector then jumps out of his chariot and starts motivating everyone
-Apollo sends back the real Aeneas back into battel
-Ares is sticking by Hector and helping him fight
-Since Diomedes can see Ares helping Hector he warns the Greeks to steer clear of him
-The Greeks begin to stumble back, Hera and Athena don't like this
-This leads to them going after Ares
-Hera asks Zeus for his Permission to fight Ares
-Hera begins to insult the Greeks to egg them on. Athena goes and finds Diomedes who is recovering from Pandaros arrow
-Athena gets into a chariot with Diomedes
-Athena helps Diomedes stabs Ares and Ares complains how Athena helped out Diomedes
-Zeus scolds Ares telling him that he is soft, and that he would've banished Ares long ago.
-Apollo is called to heal Ares wounds
-Adrestus is thrown from his chariot when it crashes
-Menelaus is about to kill but Adrestus begs for mercy.
-Adrestus claims that if he keeps him alive, his father will pay big ransom to Menelaus to keep him alive
-Menelaus is about to spare him, when Agamemnon comes along and starts telling Menelaus that he is soft.
-Nestor tells Agamemnon and Menelaus to knock it off. Stop stealing form the bodies of enemies and kill them instead
-The Trojans are about to retreat when Helenus, son of Priam, goes up to Aeneas and Hector to tell them to rally the troops and fight in front of Troy's gates
-Helenus tells Hector to go back to the city and tell the older women to find a robe and present it to the statue of Athena in the temple on the heights. They should also promise to sacrifice twelve young female cows in her honor. In return, they should pray for the goddess to protect them from Diomedes
-Helenus says the Trojans are now more afraid of Diomedes than they ever were of Achilleus
-Hector, rallies the Trojans, then tells them to hold out while he goes on a mission, then leaves.
-Glaucous is about to engage in battle with Diomedes. Diomedes is impressed with his courage and asks him who he is.
-Glaucous tells Diomedes of his family tree. Diomedes realizes that his grandfather Oenus, hosted Glaucous at his place back in Argos
-Since they refer to each other as family now, it's very likely they won't kill each other. They exchange armor as a token of respect
-Hector gets back tto troy
-he heads to talk to his father Priam
-Hector finds Hecuba, his mother, she offers him win but he refuses so that he doesn't lose his edge for war
-Hector goes and finds Paris back in the house and tells him to strap up
-Helen tells Hector she wishes she had a better husband or died in infancy, instead of causing so much trouble
-Hector goes to find Andromache and his son Astyanax
-Andromache asks Hector why he needs to keep fighting. She predicts that he will be killed in battle. She tells Hector that he is all she has in this world. Since Achilleus killed her Father and Brother.
-Hector embraces his son but he cries by his helmet. Hector then picks up his son and prays to Zeus to make him a better warrior than his father. (Ironically enough, Astyanax is killed at the end of the book)
-Hector then reassures Andromache, saying that, if he is killed, that it means it was fated, and no one can escape fate. He tells her to go back to weaving work in home.
-Hector meets up with Paris, and reassures him that he is a good warrior.
-Hector and Paris get back to battle and breathe new life into the Trojans
-The Trojans start doing so well that Athena decides to come down from Olympus and stop it all
-Athena on her way down gets stopped by Apollo
-Apollo suggests that they put an end to the battle for today.
-Athena asks how, and Apollo suggests that Hector challenges one of the Greeks to a one on one fight.
-Athena agrees and sends a telepathic message to a Trojan warrior Helenus then passes the word to Hector.
-Hector calls out his challenge to the Greeks
-Menelaus volunteers but Agamemnon doesn't let him fight because Menelaus is no match for Hector.
-Nestor calls everyone cowards for not stepping up, that Peleus (Achilleus father) would be disappointed in no one stepping up
-Agamemnon, Diomedes, Ajax and little Ajax, and Odysseus volunteer
-Ajax and Hector fight
-Ajax try's to taunt him, but Hector doesn't back down
-Hector gets slightly wounded by Ajax's spear
-Hector picks up a huge rock and hurls it at Ajax
-Ajax picks up a bigger rock and hurls it at Hector, knocking Hector over
-Apollo swoops up Hector
-Hector and Ajax both agree to stop the fight since Zeus declares he doesn't want either man to get hurt
-As a token of respect each man exchange gifts
-Hector gives his sword, Ajax gives his belt
-That night, Nestor suggests that they should gather the dead for burial
-In Troy, Antenor, friend of King Priam, suggests they should give Helen back
-Paris refuses
-The Greeks and Trojans agree on a day to gather the dead and bury them
-Zeus calls the gods together and forbids them to meddle anymore in the war
-Zeus then goes to Mount Ida in the neighborhood of Troy, just so he can keep tabs on what happens
-Greeks and Trojans begin to battle again
-Zeus tips the scale to hurt the Greeks
-Nestor holds his ground, Diomedes helps him, while Odysseus runs away
-Diomedes and Nestor ride together to take out Hector
-Diomedes takes out his charioteer
-Zeus sees this and sends a lightning bolt down in front of Diomedes chariot since this isn't the fate of the Greeks (since it was about to be a major counter by them against the Trojans)
-Nestor convinces Diomedes to turn back
-Hera tries to ask Poseidon for help, but he refuses to go against Zeus' wishes
-The Trojans led by Hector have pinned the Greeks against their ships
-When the Greeks look at their worst, Hera inspires Agamemnon to encourage the men
-Zeus agrees, sends a sign to the Greeks, and it motivates them
-The Greeks are helped by Teucher until Hector throws a huge rock at him, hurting him
-Ajax protects Teucher
-Hera is not happy with this, she asks Athena for help. Athena is hesitant at first but realizes Zeus won't be mad at her for long since she is the daughter of Zeus
-Athena and Hera start riding in a chariot but Zeus sees this and sends Iris to warn Athena and Hera to not follow through with their plans
-Hector orders the Trojans to watch the Greeks to make sure they don't sail away as well as sending messages back home to set fires to watch for an attack on troy
-In the Greek camp, everyone is in panic
-Agamemnon makes a speech declaring that they're now going to be forced to head home in shame
-Diomedes challenges Agamemnon saying that he is able to shame him that he is not as good as his dad and everyone know how Diomedes proved Agamemnon wrong. He says that he won't go home and will continue to fight
-Nestor agrees with Diomedes
-Agamemnon holds a private meeting, in which Nestor suggests that they ask Achilleus for help
-Agamemnon agrees, saying he was not in a right state of mind when he insulted Achilleus in front of everyone
-Agamemnon lists all the riches he will give Achilleus in compensation for his actions
-Nestor brings Odysseus, Phoenix, Heralds?, Eurbates, and Odios
-When they get to Achilleus camp he is hanging with Patrokolos
-Achilleus and the boys sit down and have dinner
-Odysseus catches him up with how bad things are, and reminds him that his father Peleus instructed him to be good to his friends and rein in his fearsome temper
-Odysseus also adds in Agamemnon's speech and says he could kill Hector and get big glory
-Achilleus refuses and mentions his intention to sail home
-Achilleus states that there is nothing Agamemnon can offer that is worth his life
-He recalls Thetis telling him that he can stay in Troy but live a short glorious life but go home and have a long life without glory
-he chooses to sail home, and asks Phoenix to stay with him to leave in the morning as well
-Achilleus father took in Phoenix and treated him like a son. Phoenix kind of mentored Achilleus
-Phoenix tries to talk him into still taking the offer of prizes, but Achilleus still refuses
-Ajax criticizes Achilleus for being so inflexible
-Achilleus begins to soften up and say he'll think about sailing away in the morning
-When Odysseus and his crew get back they report back
-Diomedes says that they'll be fine without Achilleus and follows up with telling Agamemnon he better see him fighting tomorrow
-Zeus sends the goddess Hate down to motivate the Greeks for battle
-Agamemnon kills a bunch of people
-The Trojans start running toward Troy, with Agamemnon in pursuit
-Zeus sends a message to Hector via Iris. He tells Hector that as long as Agamemnon is going insane, he and the Trojans should fight defensively. As soon as Agamemnon gets hurt the Zeus gives permission to go after the Greeks
-Agamemnon gets stab in the forearm, he tries to fight on but realizes that he has to go back to the ships
-Hector sees this and tells the Trojans to start fighting harder
-Odysseus and Diomedes sees this and start leading a counterattack and kill a bunch of Trojan warriors
-Hector now begins to fight Diomedes and Odysseus
-Diomedes hits Hector in the head with a spear, but it deflects off
-Hector withdraws to a safer spot and braces himself while he is hurt
-Paris hits Diomedes in the foot with an arrow and gets his charioteer to take him back to the ships
-Now Odysseus is left without any Greeks around him. He fights off the Trojans but is wounded
-A second round of Trojans surround Odysseus; this leads to him calling out for help
-Menelaus and Ajax hear him and help him
-Greeks start to get momentum back
-Hector is partly responsible for the Trojans upper hand, and also Paris gets credit for shooting Machaon, the Greek Healer, in his shoulder
-Nestor puts Machaon in the chariot to help
-Ajax steps up and starts to fight off the Trojans
-Achilleus is watching, sends Patrokolos to double check that Machaon is really hurt
-Nestor holds Patrokolos and tells him about the day he and Odysseus came to the house of Peleus looking for recruits. He reminded him of how eager Patrokolos was to join the expedition.
-Nestor gets in Patrokolos head telling him that he should lead the Myrmidons, and maybe even wear Achilleus armor.
-Patrokolos helps Eurypylos to his tent and removes the arrow he suffered. Eurypylos tells Patrokolos how bad the Greeks are doing in the process
-the Greeks retreat inside their wall
-The poet (Homer) says the gods will destroy the wall, since it wasn't built with proper sacrifices
-The Trojans are not sure how to cross the ditch encircling the wall
-One of the Trojan warriors Poulydamas, suggests they dismount and make a massive attack on foot. Hector agrees
-Battle erupts at the gates
-When the Trojans are about to breach the wall an omen occurs
-The omen is an eagle flying overhead on the left (looked at as unlucky), the eagle was carrying a snake. The snake is still alive, and keeps biting the eagle until it finally lets it go
-The Trojans think this is a bad omen and hesitate
-Poulydamas urges Hector that this isn't a good sign and to not attack the Greek ships
-Hector shuts his idea down and calls him a coward
-The Trojans were then led by hector and started tearing down the wall
-The two Ajax's prevent this from occurring (Greek)
-Sarpedon encourages Glaucaus to join him in the renewed assault
-The Greek warrior Menestheus, who is manning the defenses at that part of the wall, sends a message to the Two Ajaxs and Tuecer to come help him out
-When they show up, they immediately start killing Trojans
-Tuecer injures Glaucaus with an arrow, but Zeus prevents his son Sarpedon from receiving any mortal injury
-Sarpedon rips a hole in the wall with his bare hands and he encourages the Trojans to come in after him
-A deadlocked battle in the gap of the wall occurs and neither army advances or retreat, many people are killed
-Hector then picks up a giant rock and hurls it at the gates of the wall which leads to the Trojans now streaming in through the gates and also over the wall
-Zeus leaves the action because he doesn't think a god will interfere
-Poseidon thinks otherwise, and decides to ride down to Troy. Walks onto the beach and takes on the form of a Greek by the name Calchas.
-He courage's both Ajax to defend a certain position where the battle line is weak
-He fills them with courage. Little ajax realizes a god has contacted them. They both rush into battle.
-Poseidon then encourages the Greek warriors, by calling them cowards for hanging back.
-Both Ajax lead the resistance against Troy
-Poseidon disguised as Thoas (a fellow Greek), starts conversation with Idomeneus starts discussing how everyone needs to start fighting
-Idomemeus agrees, and says a god must be helping the Trojans
-Idomeneus rushes back to battle and encounter Meriones. Meriones is given another spare spear from Idomeneus
-Poseidon is fighting hard with the Greeks. He retains a mortal form so that Zeus won't see him participating
-Idomeneus and Deiphobos get into an argument, that leads to a fight between everyone
-Deiphobos calls Aeneas, who calls his buddies
-Idomeneus calls his own buddies
-Trojans and Greeks fight over the body of Askalaphos
-Meriones stabs Deiphobos in the hand but his brother Polites drags him out of the fighting
-Menelaus goes in for revenge for Helenus killing a Greek
-Helenus arrow deflects off Menelaus chest, but Menelaus spear destroys Helenus hand
-Helenus leaves
-Menelaus kills more
-Hector presses more on his assault
-Poulydamas urges Hector to concentrate their forces at a safe location, so that they can decide their next move. Hector agrees
-Hector sees Paris and starts calling him a coward
-Hector and Paris run into the tick of the fight
-Ajax throw out an insult against Hector
-An omen then occurs
-An eagle flies by on the right, and the Greeks cheer
-After Nestor is done helping the healer Machaon, he steps out to the Greeks losing the battle
-Nestor debates to join the battle or if he should report to Agamemnon
-He decides to find Agamemnon, who is sitting with Diomedes and Odysseus away from the fighting. All three injured
-Agamemnon thinks they're beat after he bad news
-He suggests to start moving the ships to the water
-Odysseus refuses due to the idea that the soldiers will stop fighting once they sail off causing everyone to die
-Diomedes suggests that they go back into battle
-Poseidon in disguise tells Agamemnon that the gods aren't entirely against them, that their will be a day when the Trojans back down
-Poseidon then races off and does a war cry that gives the Greek soldiers courage
-Hera sees what Poseidon is doing and is overjoyed but is afraid of what might happen if Zeus catches wind of it
-Hera decides to distract Zeus
-First she gets pretty. Then calls Aphrodite (the goddess of love), she asks to borrow loveliness and desirability. (Breast plate)
-On the way to visit Zeus Hera pays a visit to Sleep and asks him to knock Zeus out as soon as they're done fornicating
-Hera reassures sleep she'll repay him with a young lady despite Sleep's fear of making Zeus angry
-Zeus and Hera fornicate
-Sleep tells Poseidon to hurry up and fight the Greeks while Zeus is asleep
-Poseidon leads the Greek attack
-Hector throws a spear at Ajax but is deflected where his shield and sword straps overlap
-Ajax throws a huge rock at Hector in response
-Hector is pulled out of the way and is brought back towards Troy
-with Hector's departure the Greek's are encouraged again
-the Greeks begin to make a comeback
-Zeus wakes up and is made at Hera
-Especially mad at Poseidon helping out the Greeks
-Zeus complains Hera tricked him
-Hera claims she didn't give Poseidon the idea
-Zeus says okay and says that they must go to Olympus and to get Iris and Apollo
-Zeus then states that the Trojans will keep pressing on as far as the ships of Achilleus, then Achilleus will send Patrokolos into battle in his Place. Patrokolos will kill Zeus' son Sarpedon, then Hector will kill him. Achilleus will kill hector and the tide of the war will turn, ultimately leading towards the destruction of Troy
-Hera sends Iris and Apollo to meet Zeus on Ida
-Zeus sends Apollo down to revive Hector. Apollo reveals himself as a Trojan Hero and tells Hector to return to the battle; the gods will clear a path for him.
-Hector drives on against the Greeks
-The Greeks attempt to put on a brave front against Hector, but Apollo puts the fear of god into them. Then they run in fear
-The Trojans start killing Greeks and stripping their armor
-Hector urges them to keep pushing instead of stripping their armor
-The Greeks are pushed so far back that they are fighting on the decks of their ships.
-Patrokolos leaves Eurypylos and runs off to find Achilleus
-Teucer tries to shoot an arrow at Hector but Zeus snaps the string of the bow so it goes in a wrong direction
-Ajax tells the troop the fight is not life or death
-Hector puts the fear into the Greeks so they start backtracking
-Hector continues to press on the ships
-The book ends with Ajax standing on the deck, fighting off all comers onto the boat
-Patrokolos reaches Achilleus and is in tears
-Achilleus makes fun of him for crying
-Patrokolos tells Achilleus hes being rude, and asks for permission to lead the Myrmidons into battle
-Achilleus agrees, and tells Patrokolos to take his armor as long as he only drive the Trojans off the ship. Stressing not to go farther
-Ajax can't hold onto the ship anymore, the Trojans start to burn it
-Patrokolos begins to get going, taking Achilleus gear except for a spear since only Achilleus is strong enough for it
-Achilleus begins to get his Myrmidons in order
-He encourages them for a fight and then goes back into the hut
-he prays to Zeus to give Patrokolos courage and success, as well as asking that once the Trojans are off the ship Patrokolos comes home safe and unharmed
-Zeus grants only the first prayer (driving the Trojans off the ship)
-Patrokolos leads the Myrmidons into battle, the Trojans drive back thinking it's Achilleus
-Patrokolos kills a lot of Trojans, which leads to Sarpedon telling his Lykians they're cowards for not standing up to Patrokolos
-Zeus requests to save Sarpedon for he knows that Sarpedon will be killed
-Hera refuses to honor this request for that every other god will pull their children from battle if Zeus does it
-back and forth occur, and Sarpedon is finally hit in the heart by Patrokolos spear
-with a dying breath, Sarpedon calls on Glaucous to rally the Lykians and defend his body
-Glaucous obeys, but prays to Apollo to heal the wound he got in his arm from Tuecer's arrow. Apollo grants the request
-Glaucous rallies everyone around Sarpedon's body and reminding them of his greatness
-A battle erupts around the corpse. Zeus darkens the sky
-Zeus is looking for a way to kill Patrokolos
-He lets Patrokolos have a little more glory before he dies
-Zeus puts the fear into Hector and turns the Trojans in flight toward their city
-Then he sends Apollo down to whisk Sarpedon's body out of the fighting, to cleanse him, and then take him home to Lykia for a proper burial
-Patrokolos keeps going towards Troy. If it wasn't for Apollo standing on the rampart Patrokolos may not have been pushed back
-in response to Patrokolos fourth attempt he is warned by the gods that he is going against his fate, that not even Achilleus will take Troy
-Patrokolos backs off
-Hector isn't sure whether to withdraw the Trojans inside the walls, but Apollo takes the form of a Trojan warrior and tells him to keep fighting on the plain
-Hector drives his chariot into battle
-Patrokolos throws a rock at Hector's chariot killing his driver
-Hector jumps down and a fight breaks out
-Apollo eventually stabs Patrokolos between his shoulders, knocking down his helmet, detaching his shield, and prying off the breastplate
-Then he is speared in the back by Euphorbos
-Hector comes up to Patrokolos and then stabs him in the guts
-Hector mocks Patrokolos
-But Patrokolos says Hector is the third person to kill him, foreshadowing Hector's death
-Hector shakes it off
-Menelaus gets in a fight with Euphorbos (the first man to spear Patrokolos), the first man to spear Patrokolos in over Patrokolos body
-Menelaus kills Euphorbos and starts stripping off his gear, but then backs down in the face of stronger Trojan numbers. Oh yeah, and he also recognizes that the god Apollo is aiding Hector
-Next Menelaus goes and gets Ajax, who comes to help defend the body.
-Ajax stands over Patrokolos and the Trojans back off
-Glaucous starts cursing Hector, calling him a wuss. Glaucous says the Lykians should be thankful for being good allies of the Trojans. He wants to know how come they didn't put more effort into defending Sarpedon
-Glaucous says that they should capture Patrokolos body and use it as a leverage to ransom back Sarpedon's body and his armor from the Greeks. (glaucous doesn't know that Apollo took his body back to lykia)
-Even though Hector tells Glaucous for his disrespectful behavior, but eventually instructs his comrades to work at capturing the body of patrokolos
-As for Hector, he first takes a timeout to put on the armor he stripped from Patrokolos body, it is Achilles armor
- Zeus pities Hector, he decides to give him strength for a little while, knowing he won't live long
-Hector promising to share the spoils of war with soldiers, he leads them back on the attack
-Seeing the Trojans coming Ajax and Menelaus worry about their ability to hold off adversaries
-a battle erupts over the corpse of Patrokolos
-Zeus envelops the fighters in mist and puts courage into the Greek. He never disliked Patrokolos while he was alive
-The Greeks are forced to give up. They rally when the Trojans start to drag away Patrokolos
-When the Trojans are beaten back and about to return inside the city walls, Apollo appears to Aeneas in the form of a Trojan warrior. He tells him to keep up the fight: Zeus is with them
-Aeneas recognizes that a god has addressed him, and urges the Trojans back n the fight
-Meanwhile in the camp Achilleus doesn't yet know of Patrokolos death
-The horses of Achilleus chariot refuse to return to the Greek camp. Instead they stand by weeping and soiling their manes in the dust
-Zeus pities the horses and inspires the Myrmidon warrior Automedon to take them back to the ships
-Hector sees Alkimedon riding off and Hector calls to Aeneas and says they should go steal the chariot with the horses
-Aeneas agrees
-When Automedon sees them coming he defends the chariot while Alkimedon keeps going
-The poet's focus shifts back to the fight about Patrokolos. Athena comes down in the shape of Phoenix and berates Menelaus for not being helpful
-She fills him with power and sends him back in the fight
-Apollo is still backing up Hector
-As the fight goes on Ajax calls to Menelaus to tell Antilochos to go find Achilleus and notify him of Patrokolos death
-After Menelaus finds him and gives him the instructions Antilochos goes
Menelaus rejoins the fighting
-He doubts Achilleus will come (Menelaus) (how can he fight without armor? Menelaus asks himself)
-Meriones and Menelaus scoop up Patrokolos and start making their escape. Defended by Ajax and little Ajax.
-Back at the ships Achilles sees the Greeks fleeing back down the plain. He fears the worst
-he is worried because the prophecy his mother once told him that while he was alive the best of the Myrmidons would die. Now Achilleus interprets this to mean Patrokolos
-Now Antilochos reaches Achilleus and in tears, delivers his message
-With grief Achilleus pours soot and ashes on his head and clothes, defiling himself
-he falls on the ground like a dead man
-the women among the myrmidon dwellings hear him and come over. They start wailing around him
-Antilochos holds achilleus hands to make sure he doesn't kill himself
-Achilleus then lets out a terrible cry. Its so loud it reaches his mother Thetis, where she sits at the bottom of the sea
-Thetis comes to see her son followed by nymphs. Thetis laments that there is nothing she can do for Achilleus, he is doomed, but she will go anyway
-The nymphs make circles around him on a beach, while Thetis cardles Achilleus like an infant, asking him what the matter is. She reminds him that the Greeks have gotten their butts kicked, Zeus has granted all of achilleus wishes
-Achilleus doesn't think any of it is worth it now that Patrokolos is dead
-Achilleus now wishes he had never been born. He says he lost his will to live unless he can kill Hector
-Thetis reminds Achilleus that he is now doomed to die: it is his fate that he will die soon after Hector
-Achilleus says he doesn't care, and to let him die
-He says he curses the rage that made him fight Agamemnon. Now he says that he'll patch things up with the Greek king
-Thetis reminds him he doesn't have armor
-She says she'll get him armor
-Thetis goes off to meet with Hephaistos: god of fire and metal working on top of Mount Olympus
-Iris, Messenger of the gods, comes down from Olympus and tells Achilleus to go and rescue Patrokolos
-he protests, first of all, he has no armor, and second of all he promised not to fight until his mom came back
-Iris says he should just go out to the trench and show yourself to the Trojans. They'll be afraid to see you that they'll just turn around and run
-Achilleus complies and goes to the trench
-Athena hangs Zeus' shield on Achilleus shoulder. Then she crowns his head in a flaming cloud
-Achilleus lets out a huge cry that Athena echoes
-Those cries send the Trojans off in terror
-The Greeks used this opportunity to bring Patrokolos back
-In the Trojan side, Poulydamas worries about the consequences of Achilleus rejoining the action. He argues that they should pull back within the city's walls
-Hector isn't complying though, especially after everything they accomplished
-Hector says who cares if it is Achilleus, I wouldn't run from him (he does in book 22)
-Hector says they should stay on the plain, and the other Trojans agree
-The Greeks are lamenting Patrokolos. Achilleus leads the lament
-Achilleus is torn by the grief of not being able to bring Patrokolos home safe to his father, as he promised. Now they will both die at Troy
-Achilleus swears that he won't bury Patrokolos until he has killed Hector
-Then he commands the comrades to bury Patrokolos until he has killed Hector
-Thetis arrives in Hephaistos workshop. There she is greeted by his wife
-Hephaistos is glad to see Thetis and remember how she once helped him when his mother Hera threw him off Mount Olympus disgusted that he was lame. He asks her what he can do for her
-Thetis laments the imminent death of her son and explains the whole situation
-Hephaistos says, "I also wish I could save him from death. As for the armor r problem? That's not a problem"
-He tellers her to wait while he gets the equipment
-he decorates the shield with a representation of the entire world bounded by the heavenly bodies and ocean
-within the boundaries, he shows the polarities of human life: war and peace, city and country, conflict and celebration
-He gives the shield to Hephaistos and she takes it down to Troy
-Thetis delivers the armor made by Hephaistos
-Achilleus is weeping over Patrokolos and embracing his body
-Achilleus loves the armor but is distracted at the idea of Patrokolos body disintegrating
-Thetis tells him not to worry because she put Ambrosia and nectar, the food of the gods and a reliable cure all into the corpse's nose. This will stave off the body destruction
-Achilleus then goes and swears off his rage at Agamemnon
-Agamemnon accepts Achilleus apology and says that what he did to him wasn't personal. It was madness over stealing Achilleus girl
-Agamemnon explains how zeus himself has suffered at the hands of Goddess
-Agamemnon then promises to give Achilleus the gifts he promised earlier
-Achilleus doesn't care if the gifts come either way he just wants to fight
-Odysseus tells Achilleus to chill since the warriors need to eat before fighting.
-Odysseus tells Agamemnon to present the treasure, and to swear he never slept with Briseis and promise to be more fair in the future
-Achilleus questions how the soldiers can eat when their friends are out there lying dead
-Odysseus says to not be a fool, they need food to fight properly
-Agamemnon sacrifices a boar and the army eats (does this to prove he never slept with Briseis)
-The Myrmidons take the gifts to Achilleus tent. When Briseis sees the body of Patrokolos she starts weeping. She notes how kind Patrokolos was to her and promised that he would convince Achilleus to take her as his wife
-Achilleus refuses to eat over the death of Patrkolos
-Zeus watches and sends Athena down to give him some divine food
-Now the Greeks prepare themselves for battle
-Achilleus mounts his horses and tells them off for leaving Patrokolos dead on the field. He tells them to do better
-The horse Xanthos answers him and says it wasn't their fault that Patrokolos died it was Apollo who killed, "even if we ran as fast as the wind, you're still going to die at the hands of a man and a god"
-Zeus calls the gods to assembly, he's mad that Achilleus has come back to fight and is super mad, he's worried that Troy will be conquered before its time
-He tells the gods that they have now free rein to get involved
-Athena, Hera, Poseidon, and Hermes: TEAM GREEK
-Ares, Apollo, Artemis: TEAM TROJAN
-Apollo takes the form of Priam's son Lykaon and urges Aeneas to take on Achilleus
-Aeneas admits that he tried to fight him before, and the only reason he won was because of the help of the gods
-Apollo reassures him that since he is the son of Aphrodite, and Achilles is the son of Thetis, since she is a lesser divinity. He can beat him
-Aeneas now charges after Achilleus
-Hera asks Poseidon if they should intervene, but he says they don't have to. If Ares or Apollo participate. They'll take care of it
-Achilleus taunts Aeneas asking him if he'll be big if he kills him
-Aeneas rebuttles with asking if Achilleus really thinks he'll back down despite his family tree
-Spears are thrown and then Achilleus draws his sword and runs at Aeneas
-Poseidon and Athena decide to save Aeneas because he doesn't deserve to die because he was tricked by Apollo to attack Achilleus.
-Aeneas always has sacrificed and is a descendant destined to survive
-hera says whatever
-Poseidon walks over and puts a mist over Achilleus eyes, picks up Aeneas, and carries him over the sidelines of the battle, where he drops him. Then he tells Aeneas to stay out of the frontlines of battle for as long as Achilleus is alive. Poseidon says when Achilleus is dead he can go back into battle
-The mist is removed from Achilleus eyes, he realizes that a god must've helped Aeneas
-He urges the Greeks back into battle
-Hector is encouraging the Trojans
-Apollo approaches Hector and tells him not to go head to head with Achilleus
-Apollo tells him he'll be killed
-After Achilleus kills Polydoros (Hector's brother), he loses it and rushes towards Achilleus despite Apollo's orders
-Hector and Achilleus meet each other. Hector throws his spear at Achilleus Athena blows it away but when Achilleus then tries to get Hector
-Apollo swoops in and pulls him out of harm's way
-Achilleus realizes the jig is up for now and goes on to kill other Trojans in gruesome fashion
-achilleus pins the Trojans against River Xanthos
-Then he drives them toward the city; other half he pushes into the river itself
-He dives in and starts killing people, staining the water red with blood
-He ties some Trojans up and gives them to some friends to take back to the ship as prisoners
-Lyakaon is crawling up the bank, and Achilleus remembers how he captured him before and sold him into slavery
-Achilleus throws his spear at Lykain but misses, Lykaon grabs his knee and starts begging for him not to kill him
-Achilleus makes a speech saying not to worry, he'll die soon (Achilleus will die soon too)
-He kills lykaon and throws him in the river
-This makes the river angry
-Asteropaios now tries to challenge Achilleus boasting that his father was the River Axios
-Achilleus says that his great grandfather was Zeus
-Achilleus kills him
-Skamandros is angry with Achilleus throwing dead bodies in the water
-Achilleus apologizes and says he's gonna continue to kill Trojans
-Skamandros goes off and complains to Apollo, and asks him to protect the Trojans until sun down
-Achilleus begins to try to attack the river, since he's mad the river asked Apollo for help
-The river begins to chase Achilleus, praying for help from Poseidon and Athena.
-Achilleus is reassured by both that he won't be killed by the river, since it isn't in his fate
-The river and Achillleus continue to fight. The river calls on Simoeis the river's brother, to help him out
-Hera calls on Hephaistos, god of fire, to help Achilleus
-He sets fire to all the corpses on the field, making a wall of flame to contain the two river within their banks.
-Skamandros promises not to make any further effort to save the Trojans from disaster
-The gods joined the battle
-Ares stabs Athena but doesn't pierce her shield
-Athena picks up a huge rock and hurls it at him. She hits him in the neck and knocks him onto the ground
-Aphrodite comes and starts leading Ares out of the battle, Athena runs up to her and starts punching her
-Ares and Aphrodite collapse
-Achilleus might have burst in and captured the city if it weren't for Apollo, who instilled strength in Agenor
-Agenor challenges Achilleus
-He throws a spear at Achilleus, but right when hes about to kill him. Apollo carries him away
-Achilleus is mad and races back to Troy
-Priam sees Achilleus coming and screams out to Hector who has stayed outside the walls to face Achilleus
-Priam predicts the death of Hector is the fall of troy
-Hector's mother, exposes her breast to him to remind him the role she played in nurturing him.
-Hector refuses to come inside the walls
-Hector figures that it would be better to kill Achilleus and be done with it
-He ponders briefly if he should try reasoning with him, saying offering to give Helen back along with free pick from among Troys treasures but then he realizes Achilleus would just kill
-As Achilleus gets close Hector gets nervous and runs
-He runs three times around the wall
-Zeus questions whether he should free Hector from his fate or not
-Athena explodes and says no
-The fourth time around for Hector, Zeus lifts up the golden scale of fate and tips in favor of Hector getting killed
-Athena appears behind Achilleus and tells him that he's about to be victrious
-Athena then takes the form of Deiphobos, Hector's brother. And tells him to they'll fight Achilleus together
-Hector believes it and is excited to fight with his brother
-Hector tries to reason with Achilleus and say he won't mutilate his body if he kills him
-Achilleus says no pacts between humans and lions
-Achilleus throws his spear and misses but Athena gives it back to Achilleus
-Hector tries to call on Deiphobos but he isn't there
-That's when he realized he had been tricked
-Hector charges at Achilleus but Achilleus stabs him in the neck
-Hector asks Achilleus to spare his body from dogs
-Achilleus refuses
-Hector predicts that Apollo and Paris will kill him outside the Skaian Gates
-The Greeks warriors all stab Hector's body, while Achilleus gives the god's credit for the victory
-Achilleus ties Hector's body up to the chariot and drags him throughout the land
-Andromache hears and starts crying
