Roughly 1.3 million people die every year due to car crashes and on top of that 20-50 million are injured or disabled. (Road Crash Statistics) There is a way to drop these numbers drastically down.
(Topic Introduction) The answer is self-driving cars.
(Attention Getter) How many of you would feel comfortable in a self-driving car? About 63% of American don't feel comfortable with the idea. (AAA Survey)
(Thesis + Main Points) I'm here to convince you to be more accepting of self-driving cars because they are safer, bring economic advantages, and increase productivity.
Autonomous cars can see the world better than or equal to that of a human.
LIDAR is the first tools used by the cars.
- Lidar is a 360 degree laser scanner capable of
scanning the environment up to 300 meters.
- It creates a 3D model of the surroundings with
precision. It allows the car to see everything
- Humans do not have this ability and are limited

Cameras are like the eyes of humans.
- They can create 360 degree images of the cars

- Cameras recognize signs, stop lights, people,
and many other objects.

A computer system acts as the brain of a car.
- A huge advantage of cars is their computer
systems. They take in all the data from the
sensors and creates a 3D rendering in which it

decisions in 0.5 seconds compared to the
average human time of 1.5 seconds. (Marshall)
Transition: In most cases self-driving cars can view the world equal to or better than a human, which leads me into my next point.
Self-driving cars are becoming safer than humans.
There are many hazards when driving.
- Self-driving cars don't ever drive under the
influence, they don't look at a cell phone, they
don't make risky actions for the thrill of it or get
tired or angry. They eliminate many human

- About 3100 people died from texting related
crashes and 10,000 died from alcohol and drug

Poor weather conditions are difficult to drive in.
- Humans do poorly in bad weather. This can
include rain, bright-glaring sun, and snow, but
self-driving cars have an advantage. They are
specialized to see through fog using radar and
LIDAR. They are less affected by weather
conditions and can factor in the environment

- For example a car can tell the road is wet and
will increase the follow distance and allow more

- These cars are constantly learning. Although
your personal self-driving car may have never
driven through rain, it already has the experience

Human Error is the main source of crashes.
- It is estimated by a many sources, that 90% of
crashes are caused by human errors. including
DUI and cell phone use. (AAA Survey)
- Eliminating human error would prevent 14,300
crashes daily. That would mean only about 1600
crashes daily would occur. (Gemalto)
Self-driving cars can communicate with one another.
- Humans are able to communicate with hand
signals, eye contact, and with their voices when
driving. It is argued cars lack this kind of systems.
However, this is not the case. (Marshall)
- Self-driving cars could be equipped with car to
car communication allowing local cars to
communicate with each other, allowing faster
and more efficient coordination. (Marshall)
Transition: Besides safety, there are other advantages of self-driving cars.
Self-driving cars come with economic advantages.
Cost of crashes
- When you really think about it, car crashes are
expensive. Crashes cause damage to humans,
cars, the environment, and require a cost to
clean up. According to a federal study
conducted by the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration, it costs the USA $871
billion a year in damages, which includes human
lives. (Road Crash Statistics)
The advancements in self-driving cars creates high tech jobs.
- A major counterargument is it will result in the
loss of jobs in the delivery industry. However,
according to wired.com the increase in high tech
jobs and services increase the total economic
output. Additionally, the costs it saves with
reduced crashes offsets the loss of jobs. .
Reduction in traffic and increased fuel efficiency will occur.
- Traffic is expensive in both time and money. 7
billion hours are wasted in traffic and 3.1 billion
gallons of gas are wasted. Self-driving
technology reduces traffic by eliminating
phantom traffic and accidents. They are able to
reduce fuel use as well by practicing economic
Transition: Although traffic caused by congestion will still exist, you can be doing something else while the car is driving, which leads me to the final reason you should welcome self-driving cars.
They increase productivity.
- The time driving can be spent elsewhere.
You are not driving the vehicle and have the
travel time to work on other projects. You have

is parking. Parking takes up valuable space that

Transition: Self-driving cars seem great right? But there is still a long way to go before they become the dominant percentage of cars.
(Restate / Clarify Purpose). Self-driving technology is a gradual process that requires testing and development, however it should not be overlooked and pushed away, but rather welcomed due to its advantages over humans.
(Purpose / restate) I have explained how self-driving cars work and why they are better than human driven cars because of their greater safety, economic advantages, and increase in the quality of life.
(Relate To Audience) I hope you all are more in favour of the development of self-driving cars now that you better understand them. I personally look forward to having my car pick me up, park itself, and to take a nap as my car drives me around.
