Convenience Sample
Contacting people who are easy to reach; rarely representative of the population
Voluntary Response Sample
People choose to be in the sample; only certain kinds of people volunteer thus making the sample biased
Simple Random Sample (SRS)
Every member of the population has an equal chance of being chosen
Stratified Random Sample
Population is divided into subgroups called strata, and random samples are selected from the strata
Cluster Random Sample
Population is divided into subgroups called clusters, and a random sample of clusters are selected with everyone in each cluster being surveyed
Systematic Random Sample
Every nth person in a sample is selected

Bias
Systematic favoritism; tendency to favor certain populations which often leads to under or overestimation of desired values
Undercoverage Bias
Occurs when some groups in a population are left out
Non Response Bias
Occurs when an individual cannot be contacted or refuses to participate
Response Bias
Occurs when participants do not respond truthfully
Wording of Question Bias
Occurs when questions are confusing, poorly worded, or phrased to get a desired answer
Voluntary Response Bias
People select themselves to participate; usually have stronger views than average citizens; tend to over represent strongest views
