US Coast Guard approved, have buckles and straps in good working condition, no rips, tears, or holes, and no shrinkage of the buoyant material
Things to keep in mind when guarding areas for young children
Older children might be too large for structures or play too roughly, toddlers may fall and not be able to right themselves in shallow water, children can get lost so remind adults to supervise them, watch for bathroom use in the pool, and watch for children becoming too hot or too cold.
Things to keep in mind when guarding play structures
Do not let the structure become over crowded, do not allow patrons to swim underneath structures, make sure patrons return to the surface after submerging, watch for exited children who may injure themselves, pay close attention to moving water as it can take people by surprise, watch for horseplay, and watch for patrons throwing objects at unsuspecting swimmers.
Three strategies to ensure safe group visits
Booking procedure, safety orientation, classification of swimming abilities, designation of swim areas, identification of group leaders or adult chaperones, and supplemental group strategies such as buddy systems.
To keep in mind when doing a swim test
Have the swimmer take the test in a safe area, test in shallow then deep water, be prepared to assist them, ensure that chaperones are present, if applicable, and ensure that the person safely exits the water after the swim test
Steps of the Red Cross water competency sequence
Enter the water and completely submerge, return to the surface and remain there for at least 1 minute, rotate 360 degrees and orient to the exit, level off and propel oneself on the front or the back through the water for at least 25 yards, and exit from the water
