Science rock cycle/minerals
Terms in this set (33)
made up of minerals
-usually found in rivers of streams beds
-lots of layers
-sediments that have collected or compressed over a. long period of time
materials that come from weathering of a rock and it carries and deposit by wind, water or ice
1 of the 3 main rocks types, formed from heating and cooling magma/lava
1 of the 3 main rocks types. The rock was once igneous or sedimentary rock and have changed over time from high temperature and pressure
the breaking down of rocks, soil and minerals due to freezing temperatures, water, acid or rain.
water, wind or ice that moves sediments from one location and transports it to another
sediments or earth materials deposit in a new location
a process where rocks change over time to igneous to sedimentary to metamorphic
form or cause to form crystals.
lava that is under the earths surface
an igneous rock formed from the cooling of lava or magma
a natural fuels( like gas) they are the remains of organisms that lived a very long time ago
the arrangement or classification of something into different groups
5 Characteristics that all minerals share
Definite chemical composition
means that the substance must occur in nature, it can not be created or manufactured by people.
means that a mineral can not come from something that was once living.
has a definite volume and shape, its particles are tightly packed together and can not move easily.
means the particles that make a mineral line up in a pattern that repeats over and over again, this pattern creates a crystal. A crystal has flat sides called faces that meet at sharp edges and corners
definite chemical composition
means that a mineral always contains certain elements in definite, or exact, proportions
is a property that describes a mineral that splits evenly along flat surfaces
Cleavage is due to how atmos are arranged in the crystals of a mineral
describes how a mineral looks if it breaks in an irregular way and does not split apart evenly
Think of bones, bones fracture
means that mineral can glow under ultraviolet light
produces two images when something is viewed through the mineral
(how hard a mineral is) is one of the best properties that can be used to help identify a mineral
Mohs Hardness Scale ranks 10 minerals from softest to hardest
a mineral is a physical property that is easy to observe.
tells the color of a mineral's powder. To find the streak of a mineral you rub the mineral against an unglazed tile called a streak plate.
describes how a mineral reflects light from its surface.
is the mass in a given space, or mass per unit volume. No matter how large or small the sample of a mineral is, its density will remain the same.
Density= Mass/Volume D=M/V
is the amount of matter in an object or material and is measured in milligrams, grams, or kilograms
is the amount of space that an object or material fills and is measured in milliliters, liters, or kiloliters (rarely in kiloliters)
Extrusive igneous rock
form when magma reaches the Earth's surface a volcano and cools quickly. Most extrusive (volcanic) rocks have small crystals.
intrusive igneous rocks
formed from magma and takes longer to cool down
because it takes longer, they have bigger and more crystals
