Earthquake
shaking and vibration of Earth's surface usually caused by the sudden movement of Earth's crust along a fault or by a volcano
Epicenter
the point on Earth's surface directly above the focus, or origin, of an earthquake
Fault
a fracture in Earth's crust where the rocks on either side have moved
Focus
the point within Earth where an earthquake originates. Also known as the hypocenter
Seismic wave
vibrations that transmit energy as they move through Earth materials.
Body wave
a seismic wave that travels through Earth's interior
P wave
the fastest type of body wave produced by earthquakes. Theses waves are longitudinal or compression waves.
S wave
a slower type of body waves that are produced by earthquakes. These waves are transverse waves in which material moves up and down perpendicular to the direction that the wave is moving.
Surface Wave
a seismic wave that travels along Earth's surface
Seismogram
a graphical record of ground vibrations
Seismograph
an instrument that measures and records ground vibrations
