A telegraph is a machine that is used for transmitting messages in the form of electrical impulses. It was patented by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail. The messages came in Morse Code, and you needed to decode it so that it you knew what someone was saying. Sped up business dramatically.
A locomotive is a self-propelled train car, that is generally used to push/pull other train cars. Locomotives in the 1800's were powered by steam, made from water and coal. They also moved products very fast over land.
A fast sailing vessel. Usually it was powered by wind. The clipper ship got its name because the term 'clip' meant to got fast.
An artisan is a skilled worker that crafts goods that are to be used as decorations, or artistic pieces. Such as jewelry, furniture, household items and tools. Traditionally they trained under a master for 5-7 years.
Group of workers joined together to change something in a workplace. Strength in numbers. Demands would be met sooner due to numbers/strikes.
A decision to not work, made by a body of employees, usually to change something about the workplace or conditions. Like the boycotts that took place in Georgia with Martin Luther King.
A famine is an severe shortage of food. Cause starvation and malnutrition, and it also force people to flee areas.
Discrimination is unjust of prejudicial treatment of different catagories of people or things, such as sex, race, age, etc.
Elias Howe was an inventor. He is considered the Pioneer of the Sewing Machine (he invented it). He was also a Mechanical Engineer. He also invented the zipper. The sewing machine increased the need for cotton.
John Deere was a blacksmith. He was involved in The Waterloo Gasoline Tractor Engine Company that later formed into John Deere Tractor Company. One of his business partners was John Froelich. He made the first successful steel plow.
McCormick was an American Inventor, and the founder of McCormick Harvesting Machine Company. (That later formed into International Harvesting Company, [Farmall Tractor Company]). He invented the Mechanical Reaper. It cut and bundled wheat. It could do the work of 5 people.
Samuel F.B. Morse
Morse was the co-inventor of MORSE code. He was also a painter/inventor that invented the telegraph.
John Griffiths (Ships)
John Griffiths was a naval architect that designed the first true clipper ship. His first ship, the Rainbow, sailed form New York to Canton 180 days, versus 365.
Sarah Bagley was a women's rights activist. She made a campaign, so that the maximum work day in a Massachusetts mill was 10 hours. She really wanted to knock down the discrimination and bias that women employees had to overcome. She was one of the first female telegraphers of time, and she was an organizer for the Lowell Girls.
Boyd was an African-American business man. He operated a very success furniture shop.
Allen was the first LICENSED African American to practice religion in the United States. He was also a lawyer and a judge. He is though to be the first African American to hold a judicial position, too.
John Russworm was originally from Jamaica. He was an American Abolitionist that was well known for his newspaper, Freedom's Journal.

Explain how the Telegraph, Locomotive, and Clipper Ships made Industry easier.
The telegraph helped with transportation of messages, so that farmers didn't have to go all the way to town to receive messages; which saved them LOTS of time. Locomotive/Railroads made transportation of things much faster, whether it was people, goods, or supplies.
Clipper Ships expanded the area that we could trade and sell/buy goods, because it was faster, Farmers could export more crops, and get paid more often.
How did steam power increase the industry in the North?
Steam made it so that factories could build anywhere on a river/body of water. Steam would provide the power. It was also much more reliable year round.
Why did immigrants from Ireland and Germany come to America?
Germans- Political and civil unrest
Ireland- There was a potato famine, which caused starvation, so they left.
Describe working conditions in factories.
Working conditions in factories were not very great at all. You would work for prolonged periods of time, in small, hot and humid areas. It almost always smelled of body odor. Conditions were horrible, and there were some activists out there, such as Sarah Bagley, that wanted conditions to be better.
I think that the most valuable and life changing invention in American History was electricity. Electricity powers lights, television, computers, phones, etc. Face it: We'd be lost without electricity. You had to have electricity before you had indoor plumbing. Electricity also powers stoves, and heating systems, which in 'the olden days' were powered by fire; which is much more dangerous than electricity.
