The Prince of Aragon chooses the silver chest which is incorrect, so he leaves. The servant announces that a wealthy and grand suitor (Bassanio) has arrived.
Act 3 Scene 1 summary
Solanio and Salarino found out that Antonio's ship was wrecked in the English Channel. Shylock is deeply angered about Jessica and Tubal tells him about how she's been spending a lot of money, but also how the ships are in trouble.
Act 3 Scene 2 summary
Although Portia is hesitant, Bassanio chooses the lead chest which is correct and they plan to get married. Gratiano also says he plans to marry Nerissa. Lorenzo an Jessica declare that Antonio has no money because of his ships. Portia agrees to help him, and gives them triple the amount of money
Act 3 Scene 3 summary
Antonio begs Shylock to listen to him, and not take the pound of flesh, but Shylock does not want to hear it.
Act 3 Scene 4 summary
Portia makes Jessica and Lorenzo head of the household. She sends a messenger to pick up robes from Dr. Bellario so that she and Nerissa can disguise as men and follow their husbands in Venice.
Act 3 Scene 5 summary
Lancelet and Jessica are joking around, and then Lorenzo arrives and the three continue. Jessica also says that she likes Portia.
Act 4 Scene 1 summary
Shylock and Antonio go to court to discuss the bond. Portia saves Antonio by dressing up as a man and finding a hole in the contract, stating that he cannot lose any blood. A punishment is given to Shylock, and Bassanio and Antonio thank Portia. Portia tries to take Bassanio's ring and at first he says no, but then Antonio convinces him to give it to her.
Act 4 Scene 2 summary
Gratiano gives Portia Bassanio's ring, and Nerissa decides she wants to try to take Gratiano's ring as well.
Act 5 Scene summary
Portia and Nerissa "discover" that their husbands have lost their rings. Antonio begs Portia to forgive Antonio. Portia and Nerissa then reveal that they were at the trial. Portia then reveals to Antonio that three of his ships have returned safely and Lorenzo to Shylock's heir
