Intrusive

Magma

Extrusive
Igneous rocks formed from magma OUTSIDE the Earth.
Lava
Molten rock that erupts on or near the Earth's surface.
Rock Cycle
The process of rocks changing from one type to another.
Geologist
A person who studies the earth and the changes that take place on or below the surface.
Mineral
Naturally occurring substances on Earth.
Sediments
Solid material that settles on land or at the bottom of water.
Rock
Naturally occurring solid substance made of one or more minerals.
Erosion
The process in which pieces of sediment move over a surface.
Weathering
The breaking down of rock into smaller pieces by wind, rain, temperature, etc.

Rocks that are changed because extreme heat and or pressure.

Layers of sediments that are compacted over time.
Igneous Rock
Rocks formed from cooling of magma.
Streak
The color of the powder that a mineral leaves when it is scratched across a special plate.
Luster
Property of a mineral that describes how shiny it is and that it reflects light.
Hardness
How easily it can be scratched by various objects.
Diamond
The hardest mineral with a hardness of 10.
Talc
The softest mineral with hardness of 1.
Mohs Hardness Scale
Ranks minerals from softness to hardness.
