Rock-forming minerals

one of the common minerals that make up most of the rocks of earth's crust.


a light-colored rock that has high silica content. Counter-tops are often made out of this.

Igneous rock

forms when magma or lava cools and hardens.


the molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the layer of hot, solid material between earth's crust and core.

Sedimentary rock

forms when pieces of rock are pressed and cemented together. Also comes from the remains of plants and animals pressed together. Layers are buried below the surface.

Metamorphic rock

forms from other rocks that are changed by heat and pressure. Usually forms deep underground.
