Five Steps in Processing a Crime Scene

1. Interview witnesses/ people involved to establish the theory of the case

c. If a crime was committed, how was it committed?
2. Examine the scene using a systematic search method.
a. Find and mark evidence
b. Get an overall layout of the scene
3. Sketch the scene to create an overall diagram.
4. Photograph the scene, the evidence, the body to get detailed pictures of what everything looked like at that moment.
5. Collect Evidence
a. Evidence should connect victim to the crime, or perpetrator to the crime
b. Avoid contamination of the evidence
c. Evidence will be examined by a crime lab
