What is a unicellular organism?
An organism only composed of one cell.
Do unicellular organisms exhibit all 8 of the characteristics of living things?
Give some examples of unicellular organisms.
Bacteria, algae, yeast, paramecium, amoeba, archaea
What are colonial organisms?
Organisms that are made up of groups of cells of the same species that live attached to one another but have few specialized structures.
Give an example of a colonial organism.
What are multi-cellular organisms?
Organisms that are made up of many cells that work together.
What is cell specialization?
Each different type of cell has a different job or role in the organism.
Give 3 traits that multi-cellular organism exhibit that unicellular organisms do not exhibit.
Division of Labor, Cell Specialization, Cell Interdependence
In what kind of organism is cell specialization a characteristic?
Multi-cellular organism
List the 4 levels of biological organization from most simple to most complex.
1. Individual Cells 2. Tissues 3. Organs 4. Organ Systems
Give 3 examples of Animal cells and what they are specialized for.
Red Blood Cells- transport oxygen
Muscle Cells- allows movement
Nerve Cells- transmits information through body
Give an example of a plant cell and what that cell is specialized for.
Stomata- found on the underside of leaves, they allow gases to pass through
What do stomata and guard cells do in a plant?
Regulate the exchanges of gases
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells that perform a particular function.
Give four examples of different types of tissues in animals and what they do.
Muscle- allows movement
Epithelial- protects against the elements
Nervous- transports information
Connective- connects organs
What is an organ?
Groups of tissues that work together to perform a specific function
List as many different organs and tell what they do.
Liver-produces proteins that are important to blood clotting
Brain-controls the body
Skin-protects internal organs
Lungs-allows oxygen intake
Kidney-extracts waste from blood, balance body fluids, form urine
What is an organ system?
A group of organs that work together to perform a specific function.
List all 11 organ systems.
Nervous System
Endocrine System
Reproductive System
Lymphatic System
Circulatory System
Muscular System
Skeletal System
Excretory System
Digestive System
Respiratory System
Integumentary System
What level of organization is represented by the eye?
Muscle cells have a large number of what organelle?
Pancreas cells have a large number of what organelle?
Ribosomes, rough ER, mitochondria
