T. Palos Chapter 8 - Photosynthesis
photosynthesis ch 8
Terms in this set (25)
Photosynthesis is divided into:
light dependent reaction and carbon fixation reactions
What does light dependent reaction do?
captures energy from sunlight, makes ATP and reduces NADP+ to NADPH
What does carbon fixation reactions do?
Use ATP and NADPH to synthesize organic molecules from CO2
In which phase of photosynthesis is oxygen produced?
light dependent reaction phase
Where does photosynthesis take place?
What is a thylakoid membrane?
internal membrane arranged in flattened sacs.
What does a thylakoid membrane contain?
contains chlorophyll and other pigments
What are grana?
stacks fo thylakoid membranes
What are stroma?
semiliquid substance surrounding thylakoid membranes
What is the relationship between energy content of a photon and its wavelength
the energy content of a photon is inversely proportional to the wavelength of the light.
What is the photoelectric effect?
Removal of an electron from a molecule by light.
When does a photoelectric effect occur?
when photons transfer energy to electrons.
What are pigments?
molecules that absorb visible light
what is an absorption spectrum?
the range and efficiency of photons each pigment is capable of absorbing
What is chlorophyll a?
it is the primary pigment in plants and cyanobacteria
what does chlorophyll a absorb?
absorbs violet-blue and red light
What is Chlorophyll b?
it is the secondary pigment in plants and cyanobacteria
What does chlorophyll b absorb?
absorbs everything but violet blue and red light
What is the structure of pigments?
What is a porphyrin ring?
A complex ring structure with alternating double and single bonds and a magnesium ion at the center of the ring
What are accesory pigments?
secondary pigments absorbing light wavelengths other than othose absorbed by chlorophyll a
What do accesory pigments do?
they increase the range of light wavelengths that can be used in photosynthesis
What does a photosystem consist of?
A antenna complex and a reaction center
what is an antenna complex?
a complex of hundreds of accessory pigment molecules.
What is a reaction center?
consists of one of more chlorophyll a molecules that can transfer electrons.
