Median
The middle point.
List all the data points in numerical order; cross off one on each end until you are in the middle.
If even number of points-- there are 2 in the middle, add them, divide by 2 and median is the result.
If odd number of points--the number in the middle is the median
Mode
The number seen the most.
Look at list, count how many times the same number is repeated, find the one with the most repeats.
If 2 are tied for the most times--list them both
If there are no repeats--"no mode" is your answer
Statistics
using data to answer questions; not yes/no or single answer questions
Variability
more than one possible answer to a question; more possible answers=more variable the data
Frequency
How often a piece of data occurs.
Bar graph
Each bar represents 1 catagory/value; bars do NOT TOUCH
Histogram
Each bar represents a range of values; bars TOUCH
Range
Distance between highest and lowest scores in a set of data. Greatest data point minus the least data point.
Box Plot
A graph that displays the highest and lowest quarters of data as whiskers, the middle two quarters of the data as a box, and the median
Measures of center
mean, median, mode
Measures of Spread
range, interquartile range, standard diviation
Interquartile Rqnge
Q3 -Q1
Maximum
the greatest possible amount; the biggest value
Minimum
the least possible amount; the smallest value
Approximately Symmetric
describes a normal distribution, bell shaped curve that is about the same on either side
Skewed Left
scores are clustered to the right and the tail extends to the left
Skewed Right
scores are clustered to the left and the tail extend to the right
