militarism
The development and build-up of weapons to prepare for a war or conflict.
alliances
An agreement between two or more countries to help each other. It can include military help, money or weapons.
imperialism
When a country takes over another country, politically and economically, to build an empire.
nationalism
Extreme pride in one's ethnic origins, and the rights and interests of one's country.
Fascism
A form of socialism that stressed extreme nationalism and placed the interests of the state (or country) over the individual.
Nazism
A German brand of fascism and based on extreme nationalism with a focus on creating a superior Aryan race, blaming the Jewish people for Germany's troubles and national expansion.
Communism
A type of government as well as an economic system (a way of creating and sharing wealth). Individual people do not own land, factories, or machinery. Instead, the government or the whole community owns these things. Everyone is supposed to share the wealth that they create.
Totalitarianism
A type of government that attempts to assert total control over the lives of its citizens.
Socialism
A political and economic system in which most forms of economically valuable property and resources are owned or controlled by the public or the state.
League of Nations
An international diplomatic group developed after World War I as a way to solve disputes between countries before they erupted into open warfare.
Isolationism
The policy that a nation should stay out of the disputes and affairs of other nations.
Appeasement
A policy of trying to avoid war by giving a country/leader what they want.
