What is metabolic rate?
refers to the total heat production by all chemical reactions and mechanical work of the body in a certain period of time
What is a direct measure of metabolic rate?
What is an indirect measure of metabolic rate?
O2 consumption measured by a respirometer
What is basal metabolic rate?
Energy needed for only essential activities; reported in kilocalories per square meter of body surface per hour
What affects basal metabolic rate?
Children have a higher BMR
Males have a higher BMR due to more skeletal muscle
Fever increases BMR
Physical or emotional stress increases BMR
What hormone regulates BMR and where is it produced?
Thyroxine from thyroid gland in front of larynx and trachea
How does thyroxine increase BMR?
By increasing metabolism in almost all body cells except brain.
What is hyperthyroidism?
Stored glycogen, proteins, and fats are rapidly broken down resulting in weight loss although hunger increases
What is hypothyroidism?
Body metabolism becomes sluggish and results in weight gain
What is the total metabolic rate?
reflects the energy needed by the body to perform all activities both voluntary and involuntary
What fraction of TMR is account for by BMR?
How does exercise affect TMR?
vigorous exercise for several minutes may increase the TMR by 20 fold
How does food ingestion affect TMR?
Increased metabolic activity of the liver after protein and alcohol ingestion contributes to the increase in TMR
