TKAM chapters 7-8
Terms in this set (27)
Scout is now in 2nd grade and it's not any better than first except she and Jem get out at the same time so can walk home together.
What did he tell her one day about the night they tried to peek in the Radley's window?
When he went back to get his pants, they were folded across the fence and someone had sewed them up where he ripped them. It was crooked sewing though, not like a lady would do it.
What do they find in the knothole on their way home from school that same day, and what did they do with it?
a ball of gray twine
left it for 3 days in case the tree was someone's hiding place
No one took it, so they did and decided everything left in the knot hole was for them.
In October, they found two items in the tree. Describe them.
two carvings out of soap.
One was a boy that had on shorts and hair that fell to his eyebrows.
The other was a girl with bangs like Scout.
The carving was very good and they couldn't figure out who did it.
What were the remaining items they found in the tree? Tell a little about each.
--a whole package of chewing gum (which they chewed without hesitation
--a tarnished medal. Atticus said it was a spelling medal. The schools used to have spelling contests.
-a pocket watch that didn't work on a chain with a pocket knife
After Jem tried to fix the watch but it still wouldn't run, what idea did he have?
to write a letter to thank the person leaving the items and put the letter in the knot hole so the person would find it
When Jem went out the next day to put the letter in the knothole of the tree, what did he find?
the hole filled with cement
Jem waited to ask Mr. Radley if he filled the hole and why. What was Mr. Radley's reason?
Mr. Radley said that the tree was dying.
"You plug 'em with cement when they're sick."
When Jem asked Atticus if the tree was dying, what did Atticus say?
Atticus said that the leaves were all green and full and there weren't any brown patches...so no, it wasn't dying.
This chapter opens with Maycomb having the coldest weather it had had in a long time. What is Mr. Avery's reason for it getting so cold?
because children disobeyed their parents, smoked cigarettes and made war on each other.
Who dies at the beginning of this chapter? Scout notes that it didn't affect their neighborhood very much.
It didn't affect them because she only came out to water her flowers, and other than that, no one saw her.
What did Jem and Scout think happened to Mrs. Radley?
What did Atticus say actually happened?
Boo finally got to her.
She died of natural causes.
What happened that made Scout think the world was ending?
It snowed! No school!
Describe how Jem built a snowman.
There wasn't a lot of snow, so...
1) They asked Miss Maudie if they could collecct hers.
2) They got all the snow from their backyard and brought it out front.
3) Jem formed 'bodies' from dirt.
4) they packed snow over the dirt bodies.
Who did it look like?
What did Atticus say about the snowman and how did that make Jem feel?
He told Jem, "from now on, I'll never worry about what'll become of you son, you'll always have an idea."
It embarrassed Jem a little.
When Atticus realized who it looked like and told Jem to change it some, what was Jem's solution?
He went and got Miss Maudie's hat and clippers and added them to the snowman.
What happened during the night that caused Atticus to wake the kids up?
Miss Maudie's house was on fire.
Why did Atticus have the kids stand in front of the Radley place since it was so cold out?
The fire might spread to other homes and theirs was across the street from Miss Maudie's. The Radley place was further away and a safer distance from the fire.
Why was the firetruck so slow getting there?
What happened with the first fire hose they attached to a fire hydrant?
It wouldn't run in the cold, so the men had to push it from town.
It burst and water went shooting up to the sky rather than on the house.
What did Atticus take out of the house that Miss Maudie valued most?
Where was Mr. Avery throwing things out from?
Atticus: her old oak rocking chair
Mr. Avery: from the upstairs window
When men told Mr. Avery to get out because the stairs were on fire, what happened
He got stuck trying to climb out an upstairs window, but he finally made it.
As Miss Maudie's home was in full flame, what did Jem notice happening in the neighorhood?
Jem noticed smoke rolling off their house and Miss Rachel's.
What other actions were happening to protect neighboring homes?
Men were on top of neighboring homes putting out sparks and burning chunks of wood from Miss Maudie's house.
What happened to Scout while Jem and Scout were watching the fire being put out?
Someone put a wool blanket around her shoulders.
What did Jem realize about the blanket before Scout figured it out?
That Boo had put the blanket around Scout.
Early in the book, the reader gets the impression that Boo is believed to do what kind of things in town?
Now, you are seeing some different things about Boo. What are some events that have happened that make you think he's not what the town folks said about him.
--sneak around a night, peek in people's windows, cause palnts to freeze by breathing on them, poison the pecans that fall in the school yard.
--He sewed up Jem's pants and hung them over the fence.
He put the gifts in the tree for them to find.
He put the blanket around Scout.
(Boo is not the things the townspeople are saying about him.)
How did Miss Maudie feel about her house burning?
She was fine with it. She said it was too big and she hated it. Now she could have a smaller house and a bigger yard and more flowers.
