What is the integumentary system?
- Skin
- Sebaceous glands
- Sweat glands
- Hair
- Nails
Serves a variety of functions associated with protection, secretion, and communication.
What does the integumentary system protect the body from?
Pathogens, including:
- Bacteria
- Viruses
- Various chemicals.
What are sebaceous glands?
Small glands in the skin which secrete a lubricating oily matter (sebum) into the hair follicles to lubricate the skin and hair. (secretion)
What are sweat glands?
- Small glands that secretes sweat
- Situated in the dermis of the skin
- Such glands are found over most of the body
- Have a simple coiled tubular structure
- Associated with the body's homeostatic relationship of thermoregulation.
- Secretion
What are sensory receptors?
- Distributed throughout the skin
- Send information to the brain regarding pain, touch, pressure, and temperature.
- Communication
In addition to protection, secretion, and communication, the skin manufactures what?
Vitamin D
What are the layers of the skin from the surface of the skin inward?
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Hypodermis or Subcutaneous Layer
What is the epidermis?
- Most superficial layer of the skin.
- Consists entirely of epithelial cells
- Does not contain any blood vessels.
What is the stratum basale?
- Deepest portion of the epidermis.
- Single layer of cells that continually undergo division.
What is Keratin?
- Waxy protein
- Helps to waterproof the skin.
What is the dermis?
- Lies directly beneath the epidermis.
- Consists mostly of connective tissue.
- Contains blood vessels, sensory receptors, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands.
What is elastin?
- Protein forming the main constituent of elastic connective tissue
- Found especially in the dermis of the skin.
What are collagen fibers?
- Principal component of connective tissue
- Provides strength and resisting stretching; a structural protein in fiber form.
- Located in the dermis of the skin.
What is the subcutaneous layer or hypodermis?
- It is actually not a layer of the skin.
- Consists of connective tissue
- Binds the skin to the underlying muscles.
What do fat deposits in the subcutaneous layer do?
They help to cushion and insulate the body.
