Cell Organelles and their function

Terms in this set (...)

"Little organ" Smallest part of a cell that performs a specific function.
Cell Membrane
A thin, flexible barrier around a cell; regulates what enters and leaves the cell. Made of phospholipids and proteins.
Cell Wall
A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support to the cell of a plant. Made of cellulose. (only in plant cells)
Everything inside the cell membrane except the nucleus (the jellylike substances that fills the cell)
(Central Vacuole)
Cell organelle that stores materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates. There are many small ones in animal cells. There is usually one large one in plant cells.
Where proteins are made. Found free-floating in the cytosol and attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum. (looks like small dots connected to the Endoplasmic Reticulm)
Golgi Apparatus (Body)
A system of membranes that modifies and packages proteins for export by the cell. (like a post office)
Endoplasmic Reticulm
A system of membranes that extend from the nuclear membrane. Studded with proteins that assists in the production, processing, and transport of proteins.
A structure in the cells of plants and some other organisms (algae) that captures energy from sunlight and uses it to produce food (photosynthesis). (only in plant cells)
"Power house" of the cell. Breaks down sugar into ATP during cellular respiration. (Energy)
Control center of the cell. Contains DNA.
Found only in eukaryotic cells
A small, round cell structure containing chemicals that break down large food particles into smaller ones.
A single‐celled organism that lacks a membrane‐bound nucleus and specialized organelles. (bacteria)
A cell that contains a nucleus and membrane bound organelles
