What is a mechanism?
A device that transmits movements so that the output movement is different than the input movement.
ALSO: The part of a machine that contains two or more pieces arranged so that the motion of one compels the motion of the others.
What is a mechanism used for?
Can be used to change the:
-direction
-speed
-force
Mechanisms are generally used to:
Change the
-direction of a movement
-the type of movement
-speed of movement
-amount of torque available to do work
Gear train
A mechanism used for transmitting rotary motion and torque.
Made when two or more gears are meshed
If the output gear is larger than the input gear, the speed & torque will:
speed=decrease
torque=increase
If the output gear is smaller than the input gear, the speed & torque will:
speed=increase
torque=decrease
If the input gear completes 4 revolutions (or is 4 times smaller) than the output gear, what is the gear ratio?
4:1 (more torque)
If the output gear completes 20 revolutions (or is 20 times smaller) than the input gear, what is the gear ratio?
1:20 (more speed)
More torque
less speed, larger output gear
More speed
less torque, smaller output gear
Force
A push or pull in a straight line
Torque
A push or pull in a circular direction
Types of movement:
-Rotary
-Oscillating
-Linear
-Reciprocating
Rotary
Around in a circle
Oscillating
Back and forth in an arc
Linear
Straight in one direction →
Reciprocating
Back and forth in a straight line ↔
