Distance north or south of the equator

half of the earth
equator
An imaginary line around the middle of the Earth forming a circle that is equidistant from the north and south poles
climate zones
climate zones are determined mainly by the location, or latitude, of the zone (The three major climate zones on the Earth are the polar, temperate, and tropical zones).
tropical zone
A climate zone near the equator characterized by warm temperatures due to direct sunlight year-round
temperate zone
Characterized by a seasonal climate, wide range of temperatures, hot and cold
polar zone
Area near both poles that have cold climates and has little direct sunlight
