Independent Variable
Factor that you are testing in an experiment. The effect of fertilizer is the IV in the picture.
Dependent Variable
What you are measuring in an experiment - your data. The height of the plant in the picture.
Control
In an experiment, the standard that is used for comparison. Does NOT have the independent variable. Group B in the picture
Standardized variables
Factors that do not change. They are the same in all groups. The same type of plant, the same amount of water and light, the same soil in the picture.
Hypothesis
A possible answer to your question. Always in an If, Then.....statement. "If I give a plant fertilizer, then it will grow taller than a plant with no fertilizer."
Problem
A problem is a question to be considered, solved, or answered. Comes from observation. "Would fertilizer make my plants grow taller?"
Experiment
A procedure designed to test if a hypothesis is supported or not. Give Plant A fertilizer and water, give plant B only water.
Data
Facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations. Measuring the height of each plant.
Conclusion
A summary of what you have learned from an experiment. If data shows that Plants A grow taller, you would conclude that your hypothesis is supported and fertilizer does help plants grow taller.
Observation
Information gathered directly by using one or more of the 5 senses - hearing,seeing,touching,tasting and smelling. You see that your plants are not growing very tall.
Quantitative
Data that is numbers based, a measurement. The height of the plants.
Qualitative
An observation that uses words to describe an object (color,shape, size, behavior, etc.) The color of the plants.
