What is an Earthquake?
An earthquake is the shaking and trembling that results from the movement of rock beneath earths surface.
Stress
A force that acts on rock to change its shape or volume
Three types of stress
1. Shearing
2. Compression
3. Tension
Shearing
A type of stress that pulls rock in two different directions.
Compression
A type of stress that squeezes rock until it breaks.
Tension
A type of stress stretches rock so that it becomes thinner in the middle.
Deformation
ANy change in the volume or shape in Earth's crust.
Three types of faults
1. Strike slip fault
2. Reverse fault
3. Normal fault
Strike slip fault
When the hanging wall and foot wall slide pass each other
Reverse Fault
When the hanging wall slides above the foot wall
Normal fault
When hanging wall and foot wall slide in opposite directions with the hanging wall going down.
What is a fault?
A fault is a break in Earth's crust.
What are the plate boundry and stress along a normal fault?
Plate boundry: Divergent
Stress: Tension
What are the plate boundry and stress along a reverse fault?
Plate boundry: Convergent
Stress: Compression
What are the plate boundry and stress along a Strike Slip fault?
Plate boundry: Transform
Stress: Shearing
Fault block mountains are caused by two ______ faults
Normal
Folds
Bends in rock
Anticline
A fold in rock that bends upward.
Syncline
A fold in rock that bends downward.
Plateau
A large area of flat land elevated high above sea level.
Shearing Image
Stress that forces sections of rock to slide past each other
Compression image
Stress that forces section of rock towards each other.
Tension image
Stress that pulls sections of rock apart.
Tension (what happens to the hanging wall)
Hanging wall moves down
Compression (What happens to the hanging wall)
Hanging wall moves up
Shearing
No hanging or Footwall
Hanging wall
Located above the fault
Foot wall
Located below the fault
