Tips for taking notes and having them work for you.
Terms in this set (10)
Take selective notes
Listen and hone in on important concepts and ideas, there is no way to write down every word of a lecture.
Laptop vs. notebook
Use the method that will work best for you, taking into consideration the rules of the instructor.
Put the ideas into your own words
By writing in your own words, you are actually studying while you write; your comprehension will also be higher and the information easier to remember.
Review your notes right after class
You will be able to fill in details and flesh out your notes while the lecture is still fresh in your mind.
Comprehend first, Write second
Make sure you comprehend the idea or concept before you write down the notes in your own words, ask questions if necessary.
Use the Cornell System
Draw a line from down the left side of your paper about 1 1/2 inches from the margin. Take your notes during class on the right of this line. On the left side write down key words or questions after class. Cover your notes and see if you can recall the lecture by just reviewing the left hand column. You should be able to get a good idea of how much you've understood.
Good method for kinesthetic learners. Write the main concept in the center of a paper, fill in related concepts coming out from that center idea. Use colors, symbols and images to make it more memorable.
If your instructor provides you with lecture notes prior to class, print them out and review them. Then using the back of the sheet, take notes in your own words, perhaps using the Cornell Method.
Power Point Miniatures
If your instructor provides these, print out three slides to a page and review them. During class lecture you fill in the lines provided with your own notes. You might be able to get more detail out of the lecture by having the key points and concepts already written down for you.
By reviewing your notes within 24 hours of taking them you may have to re-learn the information. Manipulate them....Paraphrase them...Summarize them....To simply go over them is not enough, work with your material. Active is beter than passive!
