Key Concepts:
Terms in this set (20)
square root function
A function that contains the square root of a variable.
radical function
A function that contains radicals with variables in the radicand.
radicand
The expression that is under the radical sign.
radical expression
An expression that contains a radical.
rationalizing the denominator
A method used to eliminate radicals from the denominator of a fraction.
radical equations
Equations that contain radicals with variables in the radicand.
extraneous solutions
Results that are not solutions to the original equation.
hypotenuse
The side opposite the right angle of a right triangle.
legs
The side of a right triangle that form the right angle.
converse
The statement formed by exchanging the phrases after if and then of an if-then statement.
Pythagorean triple
Counting numbers that satisfy the Pythagorean Theorem.
trigonometry
The study of the properties of triangles and trigonometric functions and their applications.
trigonometric ratio
A ratio of the lengths of side of a right triangle.
sine
For an acute angle of a right triangle, the ratio of the measure of the leg opposite the acute angle to the measure of the hypotenuse.
cosine
For an acute angle of a right triangle, the ratio of the measure of the leg adjacent to the acute angle to the measure of the hypotenuse.
tangent
For an acute angle of a right triangle, the ratio of the measure of the leg opposite the acute angle to the measure of the leg adjacent to the acute angle.
solving the triangle
Finding the measures of all of the angles and sides of a triangle.
inverse sine
If angle A is an acute angle and the sine of A is x, then the inverse sine of x is the measure of angle A.
inverse cosine
If angle A is an acute angle and the cosine of A is x, then the inverse cosine of x is the measure of angle A.
inverse tangent
If angle A is an acute angle and the tangent of A is x, then the inverse tangent of x is the measure of angle A.
