Terms in this set (32)
Reference Point
A place or object used for comparison to determine if an object is in motion
Speed
"measurement of the amount of distance an object covers in a given amount of time
Velocity
A measurement of speed in a given direction
Acceleration
whenever there is a change in an object's speed, direction, or both
Force
any push or pull that acts on an object
Net Force
the overall force acting on an object after all forces have been combined
Balanced Force
the net forces of an object are equal to zero
Unbalanced Force
net force is to equal anything other than zero
Friction
a force that opposes the motion of objects ANY time they touch or move past each other
Terminal Velocity
the force of gravity and air resistance are equalized
Issac Newton
described the 3 laws of motion and gravity
Inertia
The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion
Newton's First Law
This is inertia, which is a tendency of an object to resist a change in motion
Newton's Second Law
The amount of force exerted by an object depends both upon its mass and acceleration.
Newton's Third Law
For every action (force) exerted, there is an equal and reaction (force) exerted in the opposite direction.
Action Force
The force that is first exerted in a system.
Reaction Force
The force that is always in response to the action force, the opposite direction of the action force, and equal to the action force.
Momentum
A measurement and is a product of an object's mass and velocity
acceleration of gravity
the acceleration of a falling object
Force unit
N
Speed unit
meter per second (m/s)
Acceleration unit
m/s squared
time unit
seconds
distance unit
m
momentum representation
P
Velocity formula
V=d/t
Acceleration formula
a=(vf-vi)/T
momentum formula
p=mv
Net force formula
F=ma
3 ways an object can accelerate
speed up, slow down, change direction
Two colliding objects
Have the same reaction force that comes back at the object, net Force should be equal, and the direction of motion may change or slow down
speed formula
s=d/t
