Terms in this set (23)
anything that has mass and takes up space
made of protons, and electrons, this is the smallest unit of an element that still has the properties of the element
postitive particle found in the center of the atom. The number of protons in an atom determines what element you have.
Neutral particle found in the center of the atom.
Negative particle found moving around the center of the atom.
Pure substances that consist entirely of one type of atom.
The smallest unit of most compounds that displays all of the properties of that compound.
Van der Waals Forces
Slight attraction between oppositely charged regions of nearby molecules. These are not as strong as ionic bonds or covalent bonds, but they can hold molecules together, especially large molecules.
force of attractions between atoms
have chemical and physical properties that are different from the properties of the elements in them.
one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another.
one or more electrons are shared between two atoms.
is an attraction between molecules of the same substance
is an attraction between molecules of different substances
is the material composed of two or more elements or compounds that physically mixed together
is a mixture in which all the components are evenly spread out
the substance that causes the dissolving
mixtures of water and undissolved materials
measures the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution
is any compounds that forms H+ ions in solution
is any compound that forms OH- ions in solution
are weak acids or bases that can react with strong acids or bases to prevent sudden changes in pH
A type of Van der Waals Force in molecules. The hydrogen atom that has a partial positive charge is attracted to another atom with a partial negative charge.
