Terms in this set (25)
Radius:
Segment from center of circle to edge
Diameter:
All the way across and hits the middle.
Chord
Inside the circle and is a segment whose endpoints are on the circle.
Tangent:
Line that 'touches' the circle in one place.
Tangent point:
The point where the tangent line touches the circle
Secant
Line that passes through the circle intersecting two points.
External tangent congruence theorem:
Tangent segments from a common external point are congruent.
Central angle:
An angle whose vertex is in the center of the circle. Degree of arc = degree of angle.
Minor arc:
smaller than half the semicircle.
Semicircle:
an arc that is half the circle. Safer to have three letters in name.
Major arc:
Greater than the semicircle. It has to have three letters in the name.
What is the measurement of a minor arc?
less than 180.
What is the measurement of a semicircle?
180.
What is the measurement of a major arc?
More than 180.
Congruent circles theorem:
Two circles are congruent if they have the same radius.
Congruent central angles theorem:
In the same circle two minor arcs are congruent if their corresponding central angles are congruent.
circumference:
The area around the outside of the circle.
arc
is a closed segment of a differential curve.
inscribed angle:
an angle whose vertex is on a circle. Arc doubles from inside angle.
Inscribed angles of a circle theorem:
If they overlap in the same place, they will share the same measurements.
Inscribed polygon:
All vertexes lie on the circle.
Inscribed right triangle:
A right triangle is inscribed in the circle if the hypotenuse is a diameter of the circle.
Central angle:
If they intersect inside the circle:
Measure of angle ne +1/2 dc +bc
If they intersect outside the circle:
Measure of angle aec + 1/2 ac -ad
