Chem Test 5/9/18
Terms in this set (29)
3 ways to clean foul water
-Charcoal Absorb & Filtration
Allows a mixture to sit undisturbed so the aqueous portion separates the non aqueous solution
Solid particles are seperated from a liquid
Charcoal Absorb & Filtration
Charcoal absorbs on it's surface many substances that give a bad taste, cloudy look or odor
How did you purify water in the Foul Water Lab?
Sand Filtration, when using sand filtration it filters the liquid by catching materials, while allowing the water to pass through thus making the water filtered.
Name natural methods of water purification
Water molecules evaporate into the air, leaving behind large impurities
Feed on natural or human-produced impurities in water just below the soil surface
Through sand/gravel as water seeps farther underground
6 steps (in order) a water treatment center will take to purify water
1. Screening - Intake of water; processed through screens to remove large items.
2. Pre-Chlorination - Chlorine added to kill agents.
3. Flocculation - Crystals added to trap suspended materials like clay.
4. Settling - Aluminum Hydroxide, with it's trapped particles, are allowed to settle on the bottom of the tank.
5. Sand Filtration - Remove suspended materials that didn't settle at the bottom.
6. Post-Chlorination - Chlorine concentration is adjusted to ensure the right amount.
3 treatments that are optional for water treatment centers to do
Spraying water into air to improve taste and remove odor
neutralizing acidic water to lessen damage to pipes
added to reduce tooth decay
Do we drink pure water?
No, while our water is very close to perfect only being 1 or 2 pH off of 7, it would take many filtration attempts to get "pure water"
Hard vs Soft water
Hard - Contains Ca, Mg, Fe
Soft - By adding sodium carbonate it removes the ions, softening the water.
Several Problems with Hard Water
- interferes with cleaning actions
- creates soap scum
Explain Water softening methods
By adding sodium carbonate it removes the ions, softening the water.
Reverse Osmosis & what it's used for
Forces impure water through a semipermeable membrane from an area of higher concentration to a more diluted area
Different types of Water filters
treats acidic water
Removes iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide
THMs are carcinogens, which cause cancer. It's created by mixing chlorine in water with organic compounds (animal or plant remains)
Four different ways to disinfect water
Kills organic matter
Mixture of sodium chlorite and chlorine
Combo of ammonia and clorine in water
Is distillation a good way to purify water?
Nope, it's ineffective, expensive and requires high engery
