Terms in this set (38)
absolute value function
a function written in the form y = /x/, and the graph is always in the shape of a v
axis of symmetry
A line that divides a plane figure or a graph into two congruent reflected halves
boundary
A line or curve that separates the coordinate plane into regions.
constant of variation
the number k in equations of the form y=kx
correlation
A measure of the extent to which two factors vary together, and thus of how well either factor predicts the other.
correlation coefficient
A statistical measure of the extent to which two factors vary together, and thus of how well either factor predicts the other
dependent variable
(statistics) a variable in a logical or mathematical expression whose value depends in the independent variable
direct variation
an equation of the form y=kx, where k does not equal 0
domain
the x values in all the coordinates of a function
function
1. A relationship from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) that assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range.
function notation
an equation in the form of 'f(x)=' to show the output value of a function, f, for an input value x
function rule
an equation that describes a function
half-plane
the region of the graph of an inequality on one side of a boundary
independent variable
(statistics) a variable whose values are independent of changes in the values of other variables
line of best fit
a line drawn in a scatter plot to fit most of the dots and shows the relationship between the two sets of data
linear function
a function in which the graph of the solutions forms a line
linear equation
An equation that has no operations other than addition, subtraction, and multiplication of a variable by a constant.
linear inequality
An inequality in two variables whose graph is a region of the coordinate plane that is bounded by a line.
parallel lines
lines in the same plane that never intersect
parent function
the most basic function of a family of functions, or the original function before a transformation is applied
perpendicular lines
Lines that intersect to form right angles.
point-slope form
An equation of the line that passes through the point (X,Y) and has a slope m, y-y=m(x-x)
range
All of the output or y values in a function
reflection
A transformation that "flips" a figure over a mirror or reflection line.
relation
An association between two or more variables. If one of the variables changes, the other variable may also change, and the change may be predictable.
scatter plot
A graphed cluster of dots, each of which represents the values of two variables. The slope of the points suggests the direction of the relationship between the two variables. The amount of scatter suggests the strength of the correlation
slope
A measure of the steepness of a line. Given two points with coordinates (X1,Y1) and (x2,y2) on a line the slope, m, of the line is given m = rise/run= y2-y1/x2-x1
slope-intercept form
a linear equation written in the form y=mx+b where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept of the equation's graph
standard from of a linear equation
Ax+By=C where A and B are not both zero
test point
A point that you pick on one side of the boundary of the graph of a linear inequality. If the test point makes the inequality true, then all points on that side of the boundary are solutions of the inequality. If the test point makes the inequality false, then all points on the other side are solutions.
transformation
a function that changes the position or direction of the axes of a coordinate system
translation
A transformation that "slides" each point of a figure the same distance in the same direction.
vertex
A point where three or more edges meet.
vertical compression
Reduces all y-values of a function by the same factor between 0 and 1
vertical stretch
multiplies all y-values of a function by the same factor greater than 1.
vertical-line test
A test used to determine whether a relation is a function by checking if a vertical line touches 2 or more points on the graph of a relation
x-intercept
x coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the x axis/ y coordinate of this point is zero
y-intercept
The point where the graph crosses the y-axis. In a linear equation of the form y=mx+b. the y-intercept is the constant b.
