Stage 1 of Labor
Dilation and effacement occur. Usually the longest stage of labor.
Stage 2 of Labor
Crowning and expulsion occurs.
Stage 3 of Labor
Afterbirth is expelled.
Purpose of Contractions during Labor
To push the baby down the birth canal.
The thinning of the cervix.
Soft spots on baby's skull. Allow the baby's head to compress slightly during passage through the birth canal
When the fetus is positioned with its feet or buttocks first.
When the fetus is laying sideways in the womb.
Pain medication injected into a space within the expecting mother's spinal cord region that numbs her from the abdomen down.
Bloody vaginal discharge that lasts for six weeks after delivery.
How long the baby is in the birth canal.
Surgical incision made on the perineum to enlarge the vaginal opening to help deliver a baby.
Proper Weight Gain during Pregnancy
Mother experiences nausea; embryo's heart begins to beat; and the greatest risk and vulnerability for birth defects.
Quickening occurs; physically the easiest trimester for the mom.
Lightening occurs; fetus gains a protective fatty layer.
Slight fetal movements felt by the mother.
Fetus moves to head down position.
